Steven Gigli left one last fond memory at Agostini Field.

The East Union High senior blasted a three-run home run while pitching his team to a 6-2 victory in Wednesday’s season finale against Kimball.

“I was thrilled when I got the call to pitch,” Gigli said. “This was the last time on the field with the guys.”

For exception of the third inning – that’s when the Jaguars scored both of their runs – he put together a solid performance on the mound, allowing three hits and fanning eight.

The Lancers defense did their part. Junior third baseman Jordan Kron registered five putouts and second baseman Zac Carrillo and shortstop Brock Swift came up with stellar plays to close out the game.

Carrillo made a diving stop while Swift went deep in the hole for the last out.

“Our defense is the best,” said Gigli.

His team just missed making the playoffs, but East Union coach Dan Triglia liked the attitude going into the Valley Oak League finale.

“It was positive,” he said. “I was pleased with their approach to this game.”

Prior to the first pitch, the Lancers (7-7, 13-10) honored their seniors. Included were Gigli, Swift, Carrillo, Zak Lewallen, Alex Dias, John Olague, Robert Thompson, and Bryson Stonum.

Kimball (6-8, 10-8) was also out of the playoff picture.

Carrillo led off the second inning with a solo home run over the left field fence. East Union had a chance to add to the lead thanks to consecutive hits by Lewallen, Thompson and Olague.

With bases loaded and no outs, the Jaguars got out of the jam when centerfielder Kris Bartlett came through with a double play. He not only made the catch but gunned down the runner at the plate.

Kimball answered back with a pair of runs in the third. Corbin Lis led off with a hit to center and scored on Nathan Van Katwyk’s RBI single. Van Katwyk advanced to second on a wayward pickoff attempt and came home on Bartlett’s base hit.

East Union reclaimed the lead in the fourth. Carrillo led off with a single up the middle and moved into scoring position on a hit by Lewallen. After Thompson reached base on a fielder’s choice, Olague delivered a two-run double.

Gigli had a 3-2 lead entering into the final two frames. “At that point, I was still confident that I could shut down (Kimball),” he said.

In the sixth, Olague drew a one-out walk. Two batters later, Swift was plucked by a pitch. Gigli stepped up, taking the two balls-two strikes count by depositing a no-doubt-about-it shot over the center field fence to further help his cause.

From there, he shut down Kimball by retiring the side in order.

Triglia praised his defense, particularly infielders Kron, Swift, Carrillo and catcher Lewallen.

“Zak did a good job behind the plate,” he said.
