Throughout the entire season, the East Union Lancers have turned to one another to find its motivation to continue along an unchallenging 2010 Valley Oak League season. So it was pretty fitting that East Union could only find themselves atop the leader board in Tuesday’s VOL Tournament at Lockeford Springs Golf Course.

The Lancers outdid themselves once again, rolling to their fourth consecutive VOL crown, smashing the competition by 80-strokes in the league tournament. Senior Jillian Goulart rose to the occasion and edged out teammate Frances Telles for the league MVP honors after shooting a medalist-honors earning round of 84 to pace East Union.

“We both knew that the winner of this tournament would be the winner of the MVP,” Goulart said. “Of course it is going to be hard when it’s my best friend and my teammate I’m competing against, but I just went out there and tried to focus on my game. I knew the whole time how close we were, so I just wanted to focus and that’s what I did today.”

Goulart and Telles, who was three-strokes back with an 87, were separated by a single point (67-66) in a head-to-head battle for the league MVP. Oakdale High’s Jaylene Ponce was definitely in striking range with 62 total points accumulated heading into the tournament.

Yet Goulart was was able to put together the days’ best round, earning her first MVP honor and following in the footsteps of a long list of East Union MVP’s, which most recently included graduates Jackie Ketner and Krysta Clark. And just like the two before her, Goulart found her biggest motivation to be provided by her teammate.

“They are like all the famous duos, that really is iron sharpening iron right there,” East Union co-head coach Brian Goulart said of his No. 1 and No. 2. “They definitely would not be as good as they are had it not been for each other. Every practice and every match, they always had that excellent player that they were going up against.

“It was a lot of fun; great competition which was good for our team and good for the both of them.”

East Union saw its top-five golfers finish with the top-five scores of the tournament. As dominant as the Lancers have been throughout the season, closing out the VOL tournament No.’s 1-5 reiterates the sheer dominance this group has held over the remainder of the league.

Salina Tiscareno shot a 98, followed by Jenny Ketner’s 99, Angelique Cardoza’s 102 and Kailee Nuding’s 115.

“Over the recent years we have had some very good teams, especially with Krysta and Lindsay (Shoot),” Jillian Goulart said. “A lot of people thought when they graduated that our team wasn’t going to be as strong, but a lot of our younger girls, like Angelique Cardoza, really stepped up for us.

“I think what makes our team strong is our consistency.”

Manteca High had reason to celebrate after the tournament, landing three of the six at-large berths to the Sac-Joaquin Section Division IV Tournament. Mickey Dias (110), Brooke Mejorado (125) and Arienne Curry (124) all will be participating at Stevinson Ranch Golf Course. Sierra’s Allison Smith also grabbed one of the six berths with her round of 112. Chelsea Brown led led Lathrop with a round of 129.

The Lancers will try and run it to five-straight section titles, and obviously have the support and expectations of their VOL counterparts.

“East Union continues their dominance of the VOL with another undefeated season and first place finish in the league tournament,” Oakdale head coach Lee McGhee said. “They continue to develop players into golfers.

“In addition to their winning tradition Jillian Goulart and Frances Telles display the type of sportsmanship, integrity and honesty that is refreshing to see.”

The SJS Division-IV tournament is scheduled for a 9 a.m. start-up.
