Unseeded, Sierra No. 2 player Ryan Alves made a surprising run to the Valley Oak League Singles Tournament semifinals Wednesday at Sierra.

He was ultimately defeated by top-seeded Atesh Mopur, 1-6, 0-6. Mopur will face sixth-seeded Nishant Rao in a final-round battle of Mountain House freshmen this morning during the doubles tournament. The finalists also advance to the Sac-Joaquin Section Division II Individual Tournament.

Alves was the only semifinalist not from Mountain House, the dominant two-time league champion. In the other semifinal, Rao knocked off teammate Kenny Nguyen, a sophomore, 2-6, 6-4, 10-4.

Alves started his day with an 8-0 win over Patterson’s Anthenny Hernandez. He upset No. 5 seed Carlos Leon-York of Central Catholic 8-3, then ousted East Union’s Jithin Joy in the quarterfinals, 8-2.

Alves and Joy were two of three unseeded players to make the quarterfinals. Joy opened with a hard-earned 9-7 win against Sierra’s Ashton Hillard and stunned fourth-seeded Matthew Yakligian, 8-5.

Sierra’s Harshith Kumar also advanced to the quarters. Seeded second, he was eliminated by the No. 7 Nguyen, 4-8.

The doubles tournament begins at 9 a.m. The singles final starts at 11.
