After Manteca let a 1-1 deadlock slip away to Pioneer, 4-2, on penalty kicks, the tournament host wrapped the 1st Annual Buffalo Cup with a nice 3-0 win over Hilmar to finish third overall Saturday afternoon at Guss Schmiedt Field.
Brittany Costa scored on a through from Yesenia Rodriguez in the 14th minute of the morning session, but Manteca let Pioneer tie it in the 45th of the 70-minute contest.
In overtime, only Costa and Amanda Porter connected on their penalty kick tries.
“We came out very flat, I don’t know if it was because it was so early, but we could’ve won,” Manteca head coach Justin Coenenberg said. “We definitely had more opportunities (18-7 shot advantage).
“We got unlucky with our penalty kicks.”
The Buffaloes were grumpy after the 9 a.m. loss, and they took it out on Hilmar.
Rileigh Mankin sent home a 20-yard score in the 21st minute, and Costa added her second goal of the day 21 minutes later of a Mankin direct kick rebound.
Taylor Trout hooked up a through for Aireene Curry on a breakaway score a little later.
“The girls had a bitter taste in their mouths in between games,” Coenenberg said.
Manteca won the shot battle 15-6 in the Hilmar win, and both sweeper Rodriguez and fullback Jordan Nunes were pointed out by Coenenberg afterward for stepping up their games, especially with two starting fullbacks sidelined.
Pleasant Grove beat Pioneer in the tournament championship, scoring the winning goal of a 1-0 nail-biter with just 30 seconds remaining in regulation.
Manteca (4-1-1) heads to Elk Grove Tuesday for a meeting with Cosumnes Oaks.
Varsity kicks off at 4 p.m.; junior varsity at 5:30.
Carla Amaya scored in the 18th minute of the Amador win on a Marissa Bradshaw assist.
Bradshaw scored her own goal in the 42nd.
Mayra Ambriz saved 10 shots in the win, and eight in the loss to Bret Harte, and was named to the All Tournament squad.
“The team played outstanding defense,” Cougars head coach Carlos Gaspar said. “Fifth place is not bad for our first tournament.”
Weston Ranch (1-3-1) heads to Bear Creek Tuesday.
