STOCKTON — Manteca was placed No. 7 in the Sac-Joaquin Section Team Duals on Saturday and faced off with second-seeded Vista del Lago in the first-round action at Lincoln High School. The Buffaloes were outmatched from the start and lost 72-9.

“One thing during the season I like to say is that a lot of our accomplishments are actually baselines,” first-year Manteca coach Vince Bordi said. “Getting here to the team sections is something that should be happening every single year along with bringing 10 guys to divisionals and at least five guys to masters. This off-season was a little chaotic, and that’s where we really need to start making our money.

“Wrestling is a tough sport. We have guys that are banged up and bruised and I do not want to coddle them too much. This has been kind of an introduction year, and I feel we have set some good baselines, and that will set the tone moving forward into this and future years.”

The Buffaloes won two matches with Derrick Day (126 pounds) getting a pin and Ayden Marshall (154) posting a 12-1 major decision.

“I came into this match like I would any other match,” Day said. “I got myself ready and had my same pre-game.

“I came in hard and strong, and having my dad there was nice. He knows how I like to wrestle.”

Marshall came close to getting a pin a few times but did not quite get it done.

“I feel like I did pretty good,” Marshall said. “I probably should have pinned him in the second round, but I had a setback, and then he had a couple of shots on me.

“I should have put more pressure on his head, and maybe we would have got the six points instead of the four.”

Manteca goes to the Valley Oak League Championships at Oakdale High beginning Friday afternoon at 3.
