It came down to penalty kicks Saturday morning between Ripon and Jerry Terpsma Boys Soccer Classic host Ripon Christian and after the Knights missed their first two penalty kicks they never recovered while the Indians won the second-round consolation contest on penalty kicks, 2-2 (4-2).
Ripon (5-7) made all four of its penalty kicks with Ricky Langenfeld, Marco Cabello, Johan Padilla and McKeane Beier finding the net. Danny Lambdin and Jack Dooley scored on penalty kicks for Ripon Christian (3-5-1).
“We had some good chances,” Indians coach Kinsey Pettigrew Taa said. “We had a lot of opportunities to score and our ball movement wasn’t what it should have been.”
Octavio Raygoza took an assist from Matthew Gaines to put Ripon ahead 1-0 early in the first half.
“I got a nice through pass from Matthew (Gaines),” Raygoza said. “From there I took a touch and shot it between the goalie’s legs.”
Johan Padilla rallied the Indians to tie the score and force overtime in the 52nd minute on a breakaway.
“I saw my teammate going for it and he was a little behind me,” Padilla said. “So I decided to take the sprint and I got the angle on it.”
Noah De Bruyn got the Knights on the board in the first half when he lofted a direct kick from outside the 18 to tie the score at 1-1. Early in the second half Drew Meester battled for a rebound and found the net to put Ripon Christian ahead 2-1.
“I’m really proud of the boys,” Knights coach Danny Koolhaas said. “We got two goals after they got up 1-0 on us. Our boys continue to fight. We are a very young team and continue to get better. The ‘want to’ is there, there is just some of the technical stuff we have to build on.
“PKs are just a crap shoot. They put the shots in and we didn’t. That’s just the way it goes.”
Samuel Rodriguez made four saves for Ripon and David Koolhaas tallied six saves for Ripon Christian.
