OAKDALE – The East Union varsity boys basketball team could not have orchestrated a better opening period, dominating the Oakdale Mustangs on both ends on its way to a comfortable 48-40 Valley Oak League win Friday.

The Lancers (6-6 VOL, 12-12 overall) came onto the court sizzling, claiming a 17-2 lead after just eight minutes of action. East Union was able to thwart any Oakdale attack offensively and had its way with the Mustangs when they had the ball.

“The first quarter was probably our best quarter of basketball this season,” East Union head coach Brett Lewis said. “We played great defense, we swung the ball, we hit open shots; and nothing was forced.

“We had 15 points on 3-pointers so that helps too.”

Ricky Inderbitzin was one of a crew of hot-handed Lancers, finishing with 12 points, including three 3-pointers in the one-sided first period. Tyler Bylow added 15, connecting on five 3-pointers, while Teejay Gordon finished with 10.

The Lancers will not be back on the hardwood until Wednesday when they make the trip to Stockton to take on the Weston Ranch Cougars.

Manteca 66, Central Valley 46
CERES – The Buffaloes got off to their customary quick start, pouring out 23 points in the opening quarter on their way to a less-than-challenging VOL victory.

Kiwi Gardner helped Manteca (11-1, 18-5) unfold a double-digit first half lead, pouring in 13 of his game-high 20 points early on.

E.J. Godfrey and Taylor Hasal both chipped in with 14, while Ernie Pimentel added seven.

Manteca won’t have long to enjoy its 10th consecutive victory, getting a chance to avenge its only league loss when they pay a visit to the Weston Ranch Cougars at 7:15 p.m.

Sonora 57, Lathrop 45
LATHROP – The Spartans were unable to register their first victory of the season, dropping VOL action with Sonora Friday.

Lathrop (0-13, 0-23) was led by Aivery Lewis’ 16 points and teammate Umar Muriset chipped in with 12.

Sonora (9-4, 14-9 ) was led by Alex Kiriluk’s game-high 24 points.
