Sophomore Brayden Camara hit a go-ahead, two-out single in the fifth inning, and freshman Peyton Heath pitched the final four innings in relief for the win as East Union edged out visiting Central Valley 6-5 on Friday.

It was the first official day for spring-sports contests in the Sac-Joaquin Section.

The Hawks of Ceres did not trail until Camara’s clutch RBI knock in the bottom of the fifth inning. Camara drove in three of the Lancers’ runs in all. Carson Sanders also had an RBI hit. Blake Mount and Jackson Fay plated two runs apiece.

Heath faced 15 batters in his varsity debut, striking out six while giving up two hits and a walk. Senior Zach Grabowski got the start, and he had six strikeouts over three innings.

Central Valley ace Juan Alonzo fired eight strikeouts in a four-hitter but walked six.

East Union next hosts Ceres next Monday.
