ROUNDUP: Enriquez-Lopez leads Lathrop to WAC-opening girls soccer win

Lathrop’s girls soccer team opened its Western Athletic Conference schedule Wednesday with a lopsided 5-1 victory at Pacheco.

Elizabeth Enriquez-Lopez led the Spartans (4-4) with a hat trick, and Janeese Romo added a brace.

“We had a strong start-to-finish and came together as a team,” Lathrop coach Diana Nevarez said. “It was great seeing the team connect and make exciting plays happen.”

Lathrop will look to keep it going today against Ceres at River Bluff Regional Park.

 

Ripon Christian 2, Gustine 2

Ripon Christian (1-0-1, 6-0-1 overall) had its season-opening win streak end Thursday in the Southern Athletic League road match but still managed a result after holding off a late charge from the host Reds (1-0-1, 3-3-1).

The Knights led 2-0 at halftime after early goals from Tatum Sonke and Dayna Koolhaas. Helia Vander Meulen assisted Koolhaas’ tally. Gustine put away its two goals in the second half, getting the equalizer with 10 minutes to go.

Ripon Christian travels to Waterford on Monday.

 

Sierra 4, Hilmar 1

The Timberwolves (10-2-2) got loose for three first-half goals and coasted to the non-league road win.

Payton Abrew, Maitland Kohoutek, Maya Murillo and Lindsey Rose each scored, while Zoe Sandoval recorded two saves. Alexis Aguilar struck in the second half for Hilmar (7-2-1).

 

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Patterson 47, Ripon Christian 36

Ripon Christian (4-3) fared well against the undefeated Thompson Chevrolet Christmas Classic host Tigers (10-0), who trailed 15-12 after the first quarter. Patterson outscored the Knights 28-12 in the middle two periods.

Maddie Yonker led RC with 12 points, 12 rebounds, five steals, four assists and two blocks. Kara Kessler added 11 points, while Reagan Van der Hoek compiled seven points and five boards. The Knights face Los Banos today starting at 5:15.

 

Los Banos 46, Ripon 32

The Tigers (6-1) outscored Ripon 29-15 in the second and third quarters combined to take control of the Thompson Chevrolet Christmas Classic opener.

America Ordunez led all players with 16 points. Kailee Inderbitzin spearheaded Ripon (3-5) with 11 points and four rebounds. Kaylee Lehmkuhl netted seven points.

Sierra 55 Pitman 33
The Timberwolves (7-2) tipped off the Venture Academy Tournament with a complete effort, outscoring Pitman 27-12 in the second half with 10 players scoring overall.

Lorenzo Jones led the way with 14 points, Julian Ruiz pumped in 13 and Anthony Mayorga had seven.

Sierra faces cross-town rival East Union tonight at 6:30.

 

Frosh boys basketball

Sierra 48 Venture Academy 40
Isaac Kempf had his way against the Venture Academy host, accumulating 25 points and 14 rebounds while making eight of 10 free throws.

Arsh Gosal added five points and nine rebounds. C.J. Simas pitched in seven rebounds, five steals and three assists. Sierra (4-2) mounted a 17-1 run in the second and third quarters to create separation.

Ariana Garcia notched the lone goal in the final minute for Lathrop.

 

Sierra 13, Hilmar 1
Shayla Cline compiled three goals and two assists in the Timberwolves’ one-sided win.

Ivy Sutton amassed five assists to go with her two goals. Kaylee Rodriguez (assist) and Mikayla Mercier also had braces.

Haylee Zeiher added one goal and two assists. Mikaela Delgado had one goal and one assist. Abigail Fraser and Kylee Pimentel scored one apiece.
