East Union’s Michael Pires paced Manteca Unified golfers with an 84 during the first Valley Oak League tournament of the season held Wednesday at Manteca Park Golf Course.
Led by low medalist Estuardo Duque’s 1-under 71, Oakdale won the league opener with a team score of 401. All six Mustangs finished in the top 10 individually. Central Catholic was the runner-up with a 475 and followed by Sierra (493), Kimball (502) East Union (513) and Manteca (519).
Pires tied Central Catholic’s Gunner Conley for fourth place. Oakdale’s Nolan Harris and Robert Bordona were second and third with a 75 and 83, respectively.
Jake Llamas Majorro carded a 93 for third-place Sierra. Teammates Jace Neto (94) and Cody Camarena (96) were not far behind, while Carson Murray (104) and Gabriel Lazar (106) capped scoring.
Backing up Pires for East Union was Tiago Chadinha with a 94. Kyle Van Arsdell (108), Jacob Hayes (112) and Xavier Guerrero (115) made up the rest of the Lancers’ score.
Gavin Goodwin and Ethan Freitas spearheaded Manteca with a 90 and 91, respectively. Cooper Chamberlain (105), Gael Juarez Salgado (105) and Gregory Collins (128) also contributed for the Buffaloes.
The second VOL tourney is next Wednesday, March 27 at Creekside Golf Course in Modesto.
Bear Creek 291, Lathrop 299
Lathrop freshman Brayden Beckman was the overall runner-up with a 10-over 46 in the non-league match Tuesday at The Reserve at Spanos Park back nine.
Kevin Lincoln of Bear Creek was low medalist with a 43.
Jayden Wall also highlighted the visiting Spartans with a birdie on the par-5 16th hole. He finished with a 58. Matthew Hammond (63), Ariyan Patel (64) and Jared Isla (68) were Lathrop’s other scorers.
BOYS TENNIS
Los Banos 6, Lathrop 3
Gabriel Godinez won the No. 1 singles match for Lathrop 7-5, 6-1 over Justin Gould at Manteca Regional Tennis Center.
Adam Godinez outlasted Chase Fifield 6-3, 6-7 (7), 6-4 in the No. 3 matchup. Eli Poklay won at No. 5 6-2, 7-5 against Luis Godina.
Oakdale 7, Manteca 2
Manteca’s Yok Chai Ma rebounded from his first loss in VOL play with a 6-0, 6-2 sweep of Parker Whitemyer in No. 1 singles.
Ivan Barajas got the win at No. 3 singles after opponent Dylan Krause retired in the second set. Krause took the first game 7-6 (5) and trailed 2-5 in the second.
BASEBALL
Lathrop 10, Pacheco 5
Senior Andrew Lopez was the winning pitcher, and he provided three RBIs on offense as the Spartans (1-2, 6-6 overall) picked up their first Western Athletic Conference victory of the season. Lathrop led 4-1 after two innings and put it away with four insurance runs in the sixth.
Lopez surrendered five runs (four earned) on four hits and two walks over 4 1/3 innings, striking out two. Andrew Zuniga retired eight of the 10 batters he faced in relief, fanning three.
Offensively, Mathew Rankin went 2 for 3 with a double and three runs scored. Omare Cross contributed a triple, a run and an RBI. Chris Williams drove in a pair, finishing 3 for 3.
Ty Ty Jenkins belted a double and had three RBIs to lead Pacheco (2-1, 6-3).
Sierra 10, Linden 2
The visiting Timberwolves (6-3) raced away with the non-league win thanks to a seven-run rally in the top of the seventh inning.
Angel Valdez led the barrage, going 4 for 5 with a double, two steals, three runs and two RBIs. Rudy Barney and Ryan McIntyre drove in two runs apiece. Troy Morrow hit a triple, and Collins Schluer scored twice and added an RBI.
Three Sierra pitchers combined for a two-hitter and overcame five errors. Josh Seals gave up the two runs on two hits and four walks with four strikeouts in 3 2/3 innings. Nikko Camarena (inning, walk) and McIntyre (2 1/3 innings, two strikeouts) also took the mound for the Timberwolves.
Mathew Schallberger fired nine strikeouts, walked nine and scattered six hits in five innings for Linden (6-5).
Mariposa 3, Ripon Christian 2
The visiting Grizzlies (2-1, 6-3) scored the tying and go-ahead runs in the final two innings to steal the Southern Athletic League win. They were limited to just two hits but were able to get on base via seven walks, three errors and a hit batter while taking advantage of four wild pitches and a balk.
Jordan Luisi took the loss for Ripon Christian (2-1, 5-5) after pitching the final four innings. Luke Crivello threw three hitless innings but walked four.
Grant Sonke led the attack, going 2 for 4 with a double, a run and two steals. Josh Buffalow contributed an RBI, and Kayden Anderson had three steals.
BOYS TRACK & FIELD
Ripon 107.67, Riverbank 28.33
Xzavier Clark was Ripon’s top points getter in the TVL dual meet at Riverbank with wins in the 100- and 200-meter dashes, long jump and 4x100.
Devin Fitzpatrick won all three distance events. Brett Shaw won both hurdles and took second in the 200. Austin Wood (shot put, discus) and Marcus Madoski (high jump, triple) were both double winners in field events. Eric Guevara contributed a win in the pole vault.
GIRLS TRACK & FIFELD
Ripon 108, Riverbank 28
Hurdling standout Starla Skiles played a part in four first-place finishes, as she took both hurdles and was on the winning 400 and mile relays.
Jenna Skavdahl won the 200, took second in the 400 and was also on the 4x400 relay. Clara Scholland won the 400, was the high jump runner-up and joined Skiles and Skavdahl on the 4x400.
Rylee Agbayani-Duenas contributed wins in the 100 and 4x100. Emily Paxton was featured on both winning relays. Jade Thommes doubled in the high jump and pole vault.
Annastacia Fisher (shot put), Shalya McKeon (discus) and Madelyn Reedy (800) also contributed first-place points.
BOYS VOLLEYBALL
Manteca 3, Central Catholic 0
Micah Crawford and Josiah Sagolpola swatted seven and six kills, respectively, while Rob Hevener had four in the Buffaloes’ 25-6, 25-7, 25-17 home sweep.
Manny Ramirez contributed with 14 service points and five digs. Manteca (2-0 VOL, 7-1 overall) competes in the Stockton Classic this weekend.

Owen Altadonna led the way with nine kills and five aces. Santino Flores added seven kills. Primo Estandarte distributed 23 assists. Patrick Estrella had 10 digs.

Manteca 2, River Islands 0
Dennin Loureiro anchored the Buffaloes’ 25-18, 25-18 victory with five kills, 12 digs and 15 service points.
Logan Romriell produced six kills, 11 service points and nine digs. Donovan Morse led the front row with five kills and two blocks.
