Lathrop’s boys tennis team pulled out four three-set victories on Tuesday, offsetting two forfeited matches in 7-2 win over visiting Grace Davis at Manteca Regional Tennis Center.

The host Spartans did not fill spots at No. 5 singles and No. 1 doubles. It didn’t matter, as they were able to earn all of their points on the court.

It wasn’t easy, though. Kurt Valerio won the No. 1 singles match 6-1, 5-7, 6-4 against Diego Cardenas. No. 2 Alfred Tolentino avoided a third set with Tanner Gilbreath, holding on for a 6-0, 7-6 (3) victory.

Aram Baltazar battled back to take the third singles match 2-6, 6-3, 6-1 against Kaleb Santos. Gabriel Godinez swept Tanner Bland, 6-3, 6-3. At No. 6, Sage Coates prevailed over Jarred Martinez, 7-5, 5-7, 6-0.

In No. 2 doubles, Gurmatt Singh and Kristofer Florendo outlasted Tayvion Prak and Anakin Cooper, 6-2. 2-6, 6-4. Brian Suarez and Enrique Valdez topped Cole Boyett and Erik Valdez 6-4, 6-2 in No. 3 doubles.

Lathrop continues Western Athletic Conference play next Thursday at Johansen.

BASEBALL

Lathrop 4, Ceres 3 (8)

Lathrop (1-0, 3-2 overall) jump started the WAC season with a walk-off victory.

Alyuss Duenez pitched all eight innings for the Spartans, striking out eight while giving up six hits and a walk. Noah Martinez spearheaded the attack, going 3 for 4. Omare Cross and Jeremy Julien each had two hits and an RBI. Adrian Zuniga added two hits of his own from the top of the order. Jeremiah Estante drew two walks and was hit once, scoring three times.

Tokay 9, East Union 3

The Lancers opened their two-game set with Tokay on Monday at Zupo Field.

The host Tigers of Lodi took advantage of erratic pitching, scoring five runs in the first and the rest in the fourth. Offensively, East Union had chances to keep pace but could not get the timely hits, leaving nine base runners stranded.

Jacob Toste went 3 for 4 with a double and a homer.

East Union 4, Tokay 3 (8)

On Tuesday, the Lancers (4-4) avenged their previous defeat with a walk-off win. Tokay led 2-0 after three innings, but EU jumped ahead with a three-run rally in the sixth. 

John Perezo hit 2 for 3 with an RBI. A.J. Vasquez laced a double. Dylan Lee pitched four solid innings, giving up one run with firing four strikeouts. Blake Mount threw two innings, fanned three and surrendered two runs. Anthony Flores pitched an inning.

Ripon Christian 17, Le Grand 4 (5)

It didn’t take long for visiting Ripon Christian (4-2) to feel at home during its Southern Athletic League opener, scoring five in the first inning.

Micah English was the winning pitcher, finishing with five strikeouts and four runs scored on three hits and four walks. Eli Terpsma struck out the side in the fifth.

Terpsma was also 4 for 4 at the plate with two homers, a double and two RBIs. Jacob Cowes finished 3 for 4 with a triple, a home run and four RBIs.

Grant Sonke also legged out a triple, finishing 2 for 4 with three runs and two RBIs. Dustin Hoekstra went 2 for 3 with three runs plated. Jay Hoekstra had one hit but drove in three and scored two.

SOFTBALL

Manteca 14, Central Valley 4 (6)

The Buffaloes (7-0) were on their way to a five-inning win, but visiting Central Valley (2-8) was able to extend it with a three-run rally.

“Wasn’t our best performance today, but we will enjoy this win and get ready for some big games coming up,” Manteca coach Josh Farris said.

Winning pitcher Nayellys Torres was relieved after four innings. She scattered five hits and struck out seven. Grace Rosas closed it out and led the team at the plate with three hits and three runs.

Baylee Willenbrink finished 2 for 5 with three RBIs. Elon James went 2 for 3, adding two doubles, two runs and an RBI.

BOYS GOLF

Ripon Christian 170, Waterford DQ

The Knights opened SAL play with gift-wrapped win, but that does not take away from the team’s effort at Jack Tone Golf Course.

Camdan Indelicato turned in 2-under 29, and Cade Van Groningen finished 1-over 33. Nick te Velde followed with a 35, Ethan Schenk with a 36 and Wyatt Hayes with a 37.

Waterford was led by Ethan Elizondo’s 45, but did not field enough players to register a team score.
