A back-and-forth battle turned into a blowout Wednesday at Lathrop’s Bennie Gatto Field, where the Spartans took down perennial power Weston Ranch 5-2 behind Ociel Mora’s hat trick.

It’s the first time since Oct. 16, 2012 — back when the boys soccer season still took place in the fall — that Lathrop (4-1-2) has gotten the better of its Manteca Unified rival.

“We made some mistakes early on but were able to fight through it against a really good program,” Lathrop coach Alfredo Reynaga said.

Weston Ranch (7-2-1) jumped ahead twice before the Spartans raced away by scoring the final four goals.

Alan Hernandez converted a penalty kick for Lathrop to tie it at 2-2 in the first half. The Spartans took the lead for good when Patrick Martinez’s free kick found the net after a fortunate deflection. They took a 4-2 lead into halftime thanks to Mora’s back-post header off of a Martinez cross.

The second half played out much differently, as Lathrop tightened up defensively and looked to build up attacks more deliberately.

It wasn’t until the final minutes that Mora capped off his hat trick, finishing a 1v1 opportunity set up by Jorge Garcia’s long ball. Garcia earlier assisted Mora’s first goal.
