With Ceres’ recent upset of Oakdale, the Timberwolves are talking championship, and for good reason.

If each of Arabella Whitlock’s singles players and doubles tandems do their job from here on out, a Valley Oak League title is not out of reach.

Sierra showed off its muscle Tuesday under the scorching sun at Manteca High, walking away with a 14-1 win.

No. 1 Ann McFerran and No. 2 Vannida Nguyen were outstanding, sweeping all six matches with just four combined game losses.

Kelly Fuentes fell to Manteca No. 1 Jasmine Sandu, 1-6, but picked up 6-4, 6-2 wins to round out the day.

“I was really impressed with Vannida,” Whitlock said. “She’s been very consistent the last three matches. It’s exciting to know that we have her for three more years.

“Ann is our constant. She’s definitely putting in the time and serve is getting good. Kelly is a sponge when it comes to learning techniques, and she just keeps getting better.”

In doubles play, the top tandem was up to its old tricks, as Jena Anderson and Stephanie Vanni breezed to 10-3, 10-2 wins despite not being on top of their game.

“Stephanie and Jena are so naturally talented athletically speaking, if they can insert strategic dynamics into their game, I don’t think anyone can beat them,” Whitlock said.

Kayla Erion and Maryann Baker are developing into a tough task as well, as the duo impressed again Tuesday, this time picking up 10-6, 10-3 wins.

Sierra travels to Oakdale for a monster matchup this afternoon, while Manteca will gear up for a showdown with Ceres Tuesday.

EU’s Klasey Kachalkin and Shalane Jackson swept Vaneza Canalita and Christina Poklay, and Vanessa Paez and Ly Hoang, 10-3, 10-6, respectively.

Paez and Hoang knocked of Ciara Jones and Kim Paulson, 10-3, while Canalita and Poklay knocked off EU’s No. 2, 10-6.

The Cougars moved to 4-3 in VOL play, and 5-3 overall.
