Sierra staved off an early charge from visiting rival East Union on Tuesday, ending with a 25-22, 25-17, 25-12 sweep.

The first-place Timberwolves (4-0, 13-1 overall) wrap up the first half of Valley Oak League play Thursday at Kimball.

East Union (0-4, 8-8) was paced by Valerie Ochoa’s eight kills and two aces. Meritiana Luani posted seven digs and two aces. Isabel Ugalino (three digs, ace) and Marcella Carranza (two digs) both dished out four assists. Bella Israel served three aces.

 

Central Catholic 3, Manteca 2

In a battle between the reigning VOL co-champions, Central Catholic (2-2, 3-6 overall) escaped with a 26-24, 25-11, 13-25, 19-25, 10-15.

The Buffaloes (1-3, 8-7) were led by Courtney Washburn’s 17 kills and three blocks. Michaela Singh netted 12 kills, seven digs and six aces. Setter Jessica Almeida’s finished with 37 assists and nine digs.

Nicole Ayala had 22 digs and three aces. Genesis Mailangi chimed in with four kills and four digs.   

 

Ripon Christian 3, Le Grand 0

The Knights (7-0, 16-4) are halfway through their Southern Athletic League title defense after knocking off Le Grand on the road, 25-11, 25-15, 25-20.

Jordan Vander Veen paced RC with 10 kills and 11 digs, and Avery McMurray added five aces and 12 digs. Ava Van Groningen and Sydney Hoffman scored eight kills apiece. Setters Megan Weststeyn and Eva Benedict handed out 21 and 15 assists, respectively.

 

Lathrop 3, Ceres 1

The Spartans (7-1, 11-4 overall) shook off a shaky start in this Western Athletic Conference clash, rolling to an 11-25, 25-22, 25-12, 25-22 victory.

Alaba Olaleye amassed 22 kills, 15 digs and two aces. Janessa Ward contributed nine kills and 12 digs.

Camila De La Garza rung up 40 assists, 10 digs and three aces. Celeste Narvaez collected 26 digs.

 

Junior varsity

Central Catholic 2, Manteca 0

The Buffaloes could not keep pace in the 22-25, 8-25 setback.

Jayana Dias tallied 11 digs, four assists and three kills for Manteca. Rylee Newcrest slapped down three kills, and Peyton McDonald picked up four digs.

 

Sierra 2, East Union 1

The Timberwolves held off their visiting rival, 15-25, 25-20, 15-10.

Gisele Velazquez racked up eight digs, four aces and two kills. Jaelynn Ballou netted seven kills and five aces. Isabella Rodriguez and Genesis Rodriguez contributed nine and six digs, respectively. Laura Montanez added four assists and five digs.

 

Lathrop 2, Ceres 0

The Spartans prevailed 25-11, 25-20 behind Annie Millan’s eight kills and six digs.

Annabelle Obasuyi added three kills and two solo blocks. Julia Roaquin registered 17 assists, while Briana Elayba had 11 digs.

 

Freshman

Central Catholic 2, Manteca 1

Manteca took a heartbreaking 25-21, 24-26, 16-18 defeat.

Talia Shelbourne registered eight kills and four aces. Jocelyn Baptist collected seven aces, three kills and three digs. Sienna Lowery contributed 11 assists, six digs and three kills. Saniyah Anthony had seven digs, three kills and two aces.

 

Sierra 2, East Union 1

The Lancers lost in three but had notable individual efforts.

Bailey Ford doled out eight kills. Jocelyn Gonzalez spiked six kills and served 11 points, six of which went for aces. Gwendolin Baker also had six aces to go with five digs. Maci Ouimette distributed eight assists.

 

Lathrop 2, Ceres 1

Lathrop held on for a 23-25, 27-25, 15-10 victory.

Alyana Vere served seven aces and had five digs. Tatiana Lopez tallied seven assists and four aces. Angelic Bermudez netted 10 digs. Dayanara Machuca chipped in with three aces, three kills and two solo blocks.
