SONORA – Sharon Washington continued her recent tear, scoring 22 points, and Davina Bennett added a double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds, but costly turnovers down the stretch were too much for Manteca to overcome in a 54-46 loss to Sonora.

Tori Selesia paced the Wildcats with 22, as Sonora shot 22 free throws to Manteca’s eight.

Allison Perry (15 points) shot eight free throws in the first quarter alone.

“We had too many possessions where we didn’t even get a look at the basket,” Manteca head coach Andrea Hiatt said. “Unforced turnovers are not something that has hurt us this year, but it definitely came up and bit us in this game.”

Manteca will now gear up for its season finale with East Union, Thursday night at Winter Gym.

Both Heather Scharmann (17 points, 11 rebounds) and Ariel McIntyre (16 points, 10 rebounds) turned in double-doubles, but early foul trouble would limit their production as Central Valley pulled off the upset.

“Dawn Kilpatrick did a great job defensively on (Hawks leading scorer) Julie Calderon,” Sierra head coach Isaac Gutierrez said. “It was a typical night from our twin towers, they did a good job, but foul trouble limited their minutes.”

Sierra celebrated the careers of eight seniors on senior night including McIntyre, Scharmann and point guard Natalie Goulart.

Sierra closes out the season Thursday at Weston Ranch.

The Bulldogs lit up the scoreboard in the second half to run away with the win.

Timnesha Wilson had 15 for the Cougars and Denell Fox added 14.

“(Ceres) just didn’t miss in the second half,” Cougars head coach Chris Bauer said. “We had two players out sick, but we still have to show up and play a little bit better.”
