Woodward standout Kyaira Jacobs set a new record with 32 points, but it wasn’t enough to overcome Kyshanti King (Great Valley) and the League 2 All-Stars in the thrilling girls game during Saturday’s 8th annual Maryann Wallace Pangburn 7th-8th Grade Acorn League Classic held at Sierra High.

King buried four 3s and fired a team-high 18 points to lead League 2’s 59-58 victory. League 2 also won the boys game, with MVP Eddie Cotton (Widmer) leading the lopsided 74-49 victory.

League 1 consists of students from Cowell, Golden West, Lincoln, McParland, Neil Hafley, Woodward, French Camp, Sequoia, Shasta and New Haven schools. League 2 is made up of students from Great Valley, Mossdale, Veritas, Widmer, Lathrop, Knodt, Brock Elliot, Stella Brockman, Nile Garden and Komure.

Jacobs and King were selected as co-MVPs in the girls game. League 2 dominated at the start and held a 15-point lead early in the second half before Jacobs led League 1’s comeback charge. The League 1 all-stars had a chance at the end to win it after stealing the ball, but their final shot was off the mark.

Inessa Villanueva (Brock Elliot) and Kyara Thompson (Knodt) contributed 10 and nine rebounds, respectively, for League 2. League 1’s Jaslyn Woods (Lincoln) grabbed 10 boards.

The League 2 boys were paced by Daniel Whaley’s (Mossdale) 20 points. Ryan Borgeson (Brockman) and Cotton each had 12 points. Cotton also had nine rebounds in his MVP performance. He’s the younger brother of Lathrop High girls basketball standout Mary Cotton, who was an MVP in this event in 2015.

Nick Bell (Woodward) and Jonathan Castaneda (Hafley) scored 12 points apiece for League 1. Castaneda also pulled down a record 22 rebounds.
