Hawkins leads San Jose to victory over Stockton

STOCKTON  (AP) — Courtney Hawkins hit three home runs and drove in six runs, as the San Jose Giants defeated the Stockton Ports 15-1 on Sunday.

Hawkins hit a three-run shot in the second, a solo shot in the fifth and a solo shot in the ninth. Shane Matheny homered twice and singled twice, driving in five runs and scoring four in the win.

San Jose right-hander Matt Frisbee (9-8) picked up the win after allowing one run on six hits over five innings. Opposing starter Brady Feigl (5-11) took the loss in the California League game after allowing seven runs and six hits over 1 2/3 innings.

GIANTS 5, PORTS 3

STOCKTON (AP) — Heath Quinn hit a two-run homer in the eighth inning, leading the San Jose Giants to a 5-3 win over the Stockton Ports on Saturday.

The home run by Quinn, part of a three-run inning, gave the Giants a 4-3 lead before Hamlet Marte hit an RBI single later in the inning.

Jeremy Eierman hit an RBI single, bringing home Jonah Bride in the first inning to give the Ports a 1-0 lead. The Giants came back to take a 2-1 lead in the fifth inning when Sandro Fabian scored on a double and Marte scored on an error.

Stockton regained the lead 3-2 after it scored two runs in the fifth inning on an RBI double by Bride and an RBI single by Eierman.

Clay Helvey (1-0) got the win with 2 2/3 innings of scoreless, two-hit relief while Trey Cochran-Gill (0-1) took the loss in the California League game.

Bride doubled and singled twice, scoring two runs for the Ports.

NUTS 7, RAWHIDE 0

VISALIA  (AP) — Austin Hutchison and three other pitchers combined for a shutout as the Modesto Nuts topped the Visalia Rawhide 7-0 on Sunday.

Hutchison (5-11) picked up the win after he struck out nine and walked three while allowing three hits over five scoreless innings. Justin Vernia (7-3) went five innings, allowing four runs and six hits in the California League game. He also struck out five and walked three.

Modesto scored in six different innings in the victory, including the seventh, when Jake Scheiner hit a two-run home run.

Ariel Sandoval homered and singled in the win.

Geraldo Perdomo doubled and singled twice for the Rawhide. Visalia was blanked for the eighth time this season, while the Modesto staff recorded its ninth shutout of the year.

NUTS 9, RAWHIDE 3

VISALIA  (AP) — Jake Scheiner hit a three-run home run in the sixth inning, leading the Modesto Nuts to a 9-3 win over the Visalia Rawhide on Saturday.

The home run by Scheiner scored Julio Rodriguez and Joe Rizzo to break a scoreless tie.

Visalia answered in the bottom of the frame, scoring two runs to cut the deficit to one, including a double by Eduardo Diaz that scored Luis Alejandro Basabe.

The Nuts later added two runs in the eighth and four in the ninth. In the eighth, Scheiner and Keegan McGovern both drove in a run, while Jack Larsen hit a two-run home run in the ninth.

Matthew Willrodt (2-1) got the win in relief while Visalia starter Bryan Valdez (2-5) took the loss in the California League game.
