Morgan’s homer leads Modesto to win over Visalia

VISALIA (AP) — Gareth Morgan hit a two-run homer in the second inning, leading the Modesto Nuts to a 5-3 win over the Visalia Rawhide on Monday.

Anthony McIver struck Marcus Wilson out with runners on first and second to end the game for his first save of the season.

The home run by Morgan scored Kevin Santa to give the Nuts a 2-0 lead.

The Rawhide cut into the deficit in the fifth inning when Jason Morozowski scored on a balk.

The Nuts later added two runs in the sixth and one in the ninth. In the sixth, Anthony Jimenez and Santa both drove in a run, while Luis Liberato hit a sacrifice fly, scoring Nick Thurman in the ninth.

Modesto southpaw Nick Wells (2-2) picked up a quality start and the win after allowing one run on six hits over six innings. Opposing starter Riley Smith (4-5) took the loss in the California League game after allowing four runs and five hits over 6 2/3 innings.

Pavin Smith homered and singled, driving in two runs for the Rawhide.
