Thirty years ago, on November 30, 1979, a real live shootout took place at the Manteca High gym. The Buffaloes’ Fred Nelson and Ripon Christian High’s Ron Vander Molen fired away at the hoops all evening. When the dust had settled, Nelson had outgunned Vander Molen 35 to 30, leaving the Buff basketballers with a thrilling 74-70 overtime win over the Knights. On the evening, Nelson was perfect from the charity stripe, sinking nine shots in nine atempts. With just 11 seconds in regulation time, MHS’s Frank Triglia had sent the game into overtime with a 15-foot jumper. Mike Delmanowski added 10 points to the Buff total.

80 years ago: December 5, 1929 - Manteca High won the replay sectional championship football game with Sutter Creek (Amador County High) last Saturday by a 12-0 score. It was a good, hard game. Both teams played clean football from start to finish. The win leaves only Manteca and Elk Grove tied in first place for the championship of this part of the state for class “B” teams. Ross Youngblood scored both Buffalo touchdowns in the second half on runs of 16 and two yards. Manteca outplayed the mountain boys in every phase of the game, making 12 first downs against none for Sutter Creek.
60 years ago: December 8, 1949 - Manteca High won another basketball game, this time a close decision over Patterson High by a 39-38 score last Friday in the Patterson gym. With 90 seconds remaining, Ray Dellavecchia scored the winning bucket. Jess Payan was the leading scorer again with 20 points. Bob Wheeler was second with 11. Coach Ralph Brandt was high in praise for the offensive and defensive work of Roy Camarena.
50 years ago: December 10, 1959 - Manteca High got off to a good start in the Stagg Tournament last week, but found the going a little tough in the final stages and wound up finishing fourth in the championship bracket. The locals beat tough Franklin High 56-54 to advance in the championship bracket, with Leon Thomason scoring in the second, sudden-death, overtime to win the game. Frank Lambert scored 22 points to pace the winners, while Thomason dropped in 19 counters.
40 years ago: December 10, 1969 - Richard Uecker was named the outstanding senior cross-country runner for Manteca High, Nick Rodriguez won the Nor-Cal section title in the sophomore division in record time, while brother Fank is the freshman VOL titlist.
Last Wednesday night, East Union High’s basketball winning streak was ended when they were tripped up by Ceres High 87-64. Chuck Dimas led the scoring for the Lancers with 19 points, Mike Posey had 12 points and Jeff Snyder added 11.
The Stagg Invitational Tournament proved to be a frustrating disappointment for Manteca High as the Buffaloes dropped a pair of close games to Stagg and Tracy High.

Juan Guevara punched home four goals and Manuel Anguiano added another to help power the East Union High soccer team to a 5-4 Central California Conference season-opening victory yesterday over Atwater High on the Falcons’ field.
Displaying overall team strength, Manteca High’s wrestling team dismantled the Ripon High squad 51-17 last night in Ripon. Rick Smith and Jeff Pine registered pins for the Buffaloes.
Manteca High’s Lady Buffaloes sank 19 of their 41 points from the free throw line in a 41-40 win over Lodi High last night in the Manteca gym. Martha Dias led the MHS attack with 12 points.
Coach Pat Ariaz’s East Union High wrestlers opened their season with a 53-18 win over Patterson High last night in Patterson. Lancer pins were by Phillip Yepez (112), Bobby Armstrong (145), Rigo Leon (163) and Jesse Hellinger (191).
One-point margins have become a pattern for East Union High’s Lady Lancers, but the slim spread tipped in their favor Monday night against Central Catholic High. EU edged the Raiders 36-35 on the EU court. Angie Mackey led the Lancer attack with 13 points, with Amy Powell sinking 10.
Both Manteca High and East Union High were well-represented on this year’s all-Valley Oak League football squad, announced Wednesday night after a meeting of all league coaches in Modesto. Three members of Coach Vern Gebhardt’s EU squad gained first-team honors, namely running back Eric Criner, linebacker John Bechtold and lineman Greg Lee. Coach Walker Vick’s MHS squad featured a pair of first-team selections in linebacker Brian McCreath and defensive back Robbie Steves.
Downey High collected a quick pair of goals and went on to hand the Manteca High soccer team its second straight CCC defeat yesterday, 6-1, in the Buffaloes’ home debut. Randy Neto netted the Buffs’ lone tally.
