Rebels JV edges Titans in opener

The junior varsity Delta Rebels opened the Delta Youth Football League season with a hard-earned 14-6 victory over the Lathrop Titans at East Union High Sunday.

Quarterback Devin Nunez spearheaded the Rebels offense with a 31-yard touchdown to Chad Ott to go with 70 rushing yards. Josh Sanchez ended up with 107 yards, 15 of which came on a scoring scamper. C.J. Manning booted an extra point to cap the scoring.

Manning did most of his damage on the defensive end, where he compiled eight tackles and three deflected passes. Mario Maher led the defensive effort with nine tackles and a sack.

Also chipping in sacks were Sanchez (1.5), Greg Jones (two) and Zach Hendrix (two).

Lathrop’s ball-hogging offense was too much to overcome for the Rebels. Elijah Sanchez had nine tackles to pace Delta’s defense, while Emilio Anaya had six to go with a fumble recovery. Nikko Anaya recorded eight stops.

Sean Cann led the offense with 40 rushing yards.
