STOCKTON — Lakeport’s Derek Thorn grabbed the lead from polesitter Cameron Hayley on the opening lap and never looked back to take a dominating victory in the NASCAR K&N Pro Series West G-Oil 150 at Stockton 99 Speedway on Saturday night.

Sergio Pena, of Winchester, VA, wrestled second away from Hayley with a late race pass to earn the runner up spot. Hayley, of Calgary, Alberta, made the long haul worth while by hanging on to third ahead of Luis Tyrrell, of Brisbane, who was making his series debut and three-time series champion Eric Holmes of Escalon.

Afterward Thorn credited for the strong showing of his Sunrise Ford/Lucas Oil/Eibach Ford.

“These guys really worked hard in the off season to give us this opportunity,” Thorn said. “We were good last year and I think we came back with some better stuff this year. Hopefully, it’s just a glimpse of stuff to come this year.”

Pena, who was making just his second series start after three successful seasons competing in the NASCAR K&N Pro Series East, was pleased with his results despite seeing his late race charge for the lead fall just short

 “We just had to kind of go for it there at the end,” he said. “We made it stick with Cameron, but couldn’t get by Derek. I had such a blast out here racing at Stockton.”

Manteca’s Jacob Gomes and Tracy’s Ryan Philpott finished 23rd and 24th, respectively, after both experienced engine woes and retired early in the race.

 The G-Oil 150 is slated to air on SPEED on Thursday, May 16, at noon.

The next event on the NASCAR K&N Pro Series West schedule is at Brainerd (Minn.) International Raceway on May 25.
