Ninety years ago, on March 29, 1927, the Manteca High baseball team soundly defeated the Brentwood High team on the local field with a score of 8 to 0. It was only a seven-inning practice game. The Brentwood team seemed very nervous and the Green and White team took a three-run lead in the opening frame and had no trouble in keeping the Brentwood tossers from home plate. Fay Forsell pitched the first part of the game and then gave way to Burton Bauer, the little freshman who has the makings of a good pitcher if he takes things easy at the present time.

80 years ago: April 1, 1937 – Milo Candini, one of the best all-around athletes the local high school has ever turned out, left Tuesday for El Paso where he will pitch for the Texas League of that city for the coming season.

70 years ago: April 3, 1947 – The Modesto High Panthers trounced Manteca High by a wide margin in Modesto last week. The final baseball score was 20 to 2. The Buffaloes scored in one inning only and made four errors in the game.

60 years ago: April 4, 1957 – Led by two home runs by Leo Valenzuela, the Manteca High baseball nine stormed over the Stagg High squad by a score of 9 to 4 Tuesday afternoon. Both times when Leo smacked the homers, there was a man on first base, giving him four runs batted in.

50 years ago: March 31, 1967 – The Manteca High swim team racked up another win Tuesday afternoon when they downed Ceres High 63-41 in a non-league meet in the Buffalo pool. The Buffalo mermen captured eight out of 11 events and were never seriously threatened as they picked up their third win of the year.

40 years ago: March 31, 1977 – Senior lefthander Darrell Womack pitched and batted Manteca High last Friday to their second Valley Oak League win of the season, a 6-0 verdict over Sonora High at the MHS diamond. Womack scattered four hits and struck out six to gain the decision.  In addition, his second-inning single drove in the Buffaloes’ first run.

East Union High scored six times in the fourth inning last Friday to down Oakdale High 9-3. Key hits by Ralph Hubbard, junior shortstop Neil Prater and Carlos Herrera underlined the attack. Winning pitcher Billy Poindexter again frustrated his foes at the plate with his off-speed, but well-placed, serves. Poindexter struck out five Mustangs in the five innings he worked.

The three doubles teams produced the points last Thursday as the East Union High badminton team edged host Sonora High5-3. Doubles pairs Donna Conley-Debbie Menchaca, Tina Kinchen-Donna Brown and Jean Windham-Linda Hayashi all won to overcome the Lancers’ singles setbacks. 

Extending its win streak to five, the Manteca High tennis team defeated Sonora High last Friday on the MHS courts, 10-5. In the last five matches, the doubles teams of Jim Bylow-Randy Adair and Paul Moore-Jeff Brock have not lost a match. 

Superior depth was a key factor last Thursday at Oakdale High during East Union High’s track losses at both the boys and girls levels. The boys lost 85-53 and the girls were also beaten 68-41. Foreign exchange student Jonas Holmberg swept to victories for the Lancers in the mile (4:46.7) and 880 (2:09), as did teammate Charles Wegner in the 100 (10.5) and the 220.

Sophomore David Cardoza shot a 37 in heavy winds last Friday to lead the Manteca High golf team to a convincing thrashing of Los Banos High, 214-234.

The skin-tight VOL golf race was made even tighter Tuesday afternoon at the Manteca Park golf course when the two-time defending champion East Union High team came from behind to defeat Manteca High 201-204. Co-medalists during the breezy afternoon were Buffalo sophomore Jim Williams and the Lancers’ Gil Beck, both with 39’s.

In only their second meet of the year, Manteca High’s trackmen ran away in the final events to defeat a visiting Los Banos High team 73-58 last Monday. Winning both the mile and two-mile races was Buffalo Gonzalo Aguilar. The Buffalo girls demolished their opponents 89-14. Andrea Negley starred in the running events with firsts in the 440 and 220 and also anchoring the winning 440 and mile relay teams. Lori Watson also fared well with firsts in the shot-put and 110 low hurdles.

30 years ago: March 29, 1987 – East Union High beat St. Mary’s High 7-5 Saturday in Modesto to win the Dave Abel Invitational Tournament title in a great team effort. The Lancers used three pitchers to contain the powerful Ram offense. Scott Heaton, Matt Nobriga and Tony Alexander did the job.

Rob Van De Pol, Manteca High’s all-stat e football player, has opted to play in the prestigious North-South Shrine all-star game, it was announced by MHS football coach Bob Lee. Buffalo teammate Eric Reis will replace Van De Pol in the July 25 Lions North-South game.

Coach Bob Baker’s Manteca High track team ripped Ceres High 107-29, while the girls trampled Ceres 112-5 in a league meet at Guss Schmiedt Field Monday. Buffalo Mike Housden was a double winner for the boys, notching wins in the triple jump (42-1) and 800 meters (2:10.38). Christina Tavares won three events to lead the Lady Buffs. Tavares took the triple jump (30-9), 400 in 1:05.54 and the 300 low hurdles (53.73).

East Union High’s golf team kept its perfect record intact, downing Sonora High 210-229 Monday afternoon in a VOL match at the Manteca Municipal course. Mike Battles shot a 37 to lead the Lancers.

Getting just one hit with two walks, while striking out 11 times, the Manteca High batters were helpless as Ceres High took a 7-2 win over the Buffaloes Tuesday afternoon. MHS’s Tim Mack broke up the no-hitter in the sixth inning.

A patient East Union High softball team took an easy 11-0 triumph over Modesto’s Central Catholic High yesterday. Junior shortstop Kim Beck paced the Lady Lancers with three of the 10 hits collected by the team.

Manteca High’s golf team rallied behind state champion Kevin Wentworth in the final stages to edge Oakdale High 217-218 in a league match at the Manteca Municipal course Tuesday. Wentworth and Robert Warren each carded 40’s for the Buffaloes. 

Manteca High’s tennis team got a lift from its doubles teams of Jon Belluomini-James Smith and Tim Ash-Cam Cardoza to roll past Ceres High10-5 in a league match Tuesday. East Union High, meanwhile, lost to league powerhouse Central Catholic High 15-0.

Tisha Herzfeld and Kelly Swift paced the Manteca High softball team to a 4-1 victory over host Livingston High Thursday afternoon. Herzfeld, in only her second mound start of the year, showed good control by striking out four batters, while surrendering only six hits and no walks. Offensively, MHS third baseman Swift pounded three hits in three turns at the plate.

Powerful Oakdale High captured the boys and girls divisions at yesterday’s track meet with East Union High by nearly identical scores of 92-34 in the boys and 90-34 in the girls. Jon Fletcher paced the Lancers with wins in the 100 meters (11.6) and the 200 (24.2). He joined teammates Dimitri Koger, Will Osmond and Chad Huber in winning the 400 relay (48.3). The Lady Lancers got just two firsts in their meet. Freshman Trina Kutcher took the high jump (4-10) and Tracy Austin triumphed in the 800 (2:31.7).

20 years ago: April 1, 1997 – Sophomore James Hardcastle’s booming three-run homer capped a four-run outburst in the fifth inning and helped power East Union High to an 8-5 victory over Castro Valley High in the opening round of the Amador Valley Tournament on Monday afternoon. Hardcastle also rapped a double and scored twice to lead the Lancers, now 9-3 on the season.

The Sierra High baseball team enjoyed a blustery day at the ball park Tuesday, knocking off Downey High 4-1 in the Dick Windemuth Tournament in Modesto. Timberwolf Matt Starke took the mound, going the distance, while giving up only two hits and a walk and fanning two batters.

10 years ago: April 4, 2007 – Behind the power of a five-run first inning, the East Union High baseball team cruised to a 9-2 win over Florin High at the Ed DeBenedetti Easter Tournament yesterday in Lodi. Starting EU pitcher Seth Morton hurled a complete game, scattering six hits and striking out five. Tre Lopez and Wade Morton each were perfect at the plate, with Lopez getting four hits in four plate appearances, and scoring twice. Wade Morton had a pair of hits, stole two bases and drove in a run. Justin Madsen also had two hits for Coach Dan Triglia’s Lancers.

Sierra High bested Hoover High of Fresno by a score of 9-3 at the Fresno Easter Tournament. Brandon Proctor collected three hits and Andrew Gabriel added two more in the winning Timberwolf effort.

Manufacturing nine runs in the bottom of the first inning and holding on for an 11-7 victory, Manteca High took the win from Ceres’s Central Valley High Friday. Beau Fryer led the charge with a 2-for-2 effort that included three runs, two walks and a stolen base. Toby Fox went 2-for-4 with a run, while clean-up hitter Gabe Souza finished 2-for-3 with two runs and two RBI’s. Tim Larsen added two base hits.

The Sierra High girls swim team continued its dominating run through the VOL with a convincing 80-point victory over Ceres High Friday. The T’wolf boys did not fare as well, being edged out in the final race. Josh Revives earned a couple of first-place finishes for SHS.

East Union High’s Erin Arevalo struck out 13 batters while not walking anyone as EU took a 2-0 softball win over Ceres High yesterday. Arevalo also used her bat to drive in the first Lancer run of the game.

Manteca High’s tennis team proved how much better it is than the rest Thursday with a one-sided 13-2 win over Ceres High. Coach Frank Fontana’s squad is now 12-0 on the season.
