Thirty years ago, on December 12, 1986, Tevani Scott, the former Manteca High sensation, was named to the NCAA’s Division II All-American volleyball squad at a banquet held in Sacramento. The honor capped a glorious career for the 5-foot-10 Scott, who helped lead Sacramento State to a 27-8 record this season.

10 years ago: December 16, 2006 – The Manteca High girls’ basketball team took a giant leap towards the Modesto Christian Tournament title by beating the Ripon Christian Knights 40-32 in the second round of the tournament. The Buffaloes received a solid effort from Kayla Tinnin who scored 14 points. Cynthia Perez added 11 points for the Lady Buffs.
Sierra High showed up to Winter Gym and scored a couple of pins in less than 20 seconds, on its way to destroying the Manteca High wrestlers 62-24 in Thursday’s VOL matchup. Timberwolf pins were by: Kevin Momb (140), Raymond Widmer, Jacob Westfall, Robert Howard and John Ivey (hvwt). Buffalo pins were by Eric Culpepper, Jory Burns and Samantha Phillips.
Sophomore center Heather Scharmann blew up for 40 points and 19 rebounds in a 67-60 overtime victory for the Sierra High girls’ basketball team over host McNair High in Stockton on Thursday. It was the first win of the season for the young T’wolves (1-7). Mallory McIntyre was also a major contributor, as she registered 10 points, 10 rebounds and six steals.
30 years ago: December 14, 1986 – Staging a remarkable second-half comeback, Manteca High upset Modesto High 62-54 in Modesto Tuesday night. Led by Kevin Wentworth’s 17 second-half points, the Buffaloes finally took the lead in the fourth quarter. Wentworth finished the game with 19 points, Rob Van De Pol canned 15 and Chad Johnson added 14 points to the Buff effort.
40 years ago: December 13, 1976 – Tony Cotta, an outstanding two-way performer in the line for the Manteca High football team, was named the most valuable player Monday night during the Manteca Lions Club’s annual football banquet at the MRPS Hall. Cotta, one of only four returning starters on this year’s Buffalo team, was also one of the captain’s award recipients, was twice named player of the week during the season, and was honored for his first- team all-Valley Oak League selection. A crowd of approximately 175 attended the Lions affair, which was featured by guest speaker Marv Hubbard of the Oakland Raiders.
A basketball spinning on the rim fell the right way—for Manteca High. The result: a heart-stopping 58-57 win over Atwater High Friday night. The Buffaloes’ Pete Duenas sank a free throw with 11 seconds remaining to give Manteca its winning margin. Junior Bob O’Rourke was high scorer for the game with 19 points for the Buffs. Sophomore Randy Ross added 12 to MHS’s balanced scoring as Coach Pat Douglass’ team grabbed its fifth win in seven starts.
Galt High, which trailed by nine at halftime, outscored East Union High 27-10 in the third quarter to key a 62-55 win at Dalben Center Friday night. Senior 6-4 forward Bruce Corbett enjoyed his best night of the young season for the Lancers with 18 points. Eric Stagno had 11 before fouling out in the second half.
Under new coach John Gray, the East Union High wrestlers downed Hilmar High 48-22 in their only dual meet thus far. EU picked up all its points via pins. Lancers putting their opponents on the floor were Bill Bryan (95), Warren Thomsen (145), Kevin Strahan (154), Rich Lawellin (165), Marlin Hughes (175), Nick DeGroot (191) and Bill DeGroot (hvywt).
The Manteca High gymnastics team closed its activities before the Christmas holidays in fine style Wednesday night, sweeping in all three levels over East Union High at the MHS gym. The team also had successful matches against Oakdale and Sonora High Schools.
Behind the firm foot of foreign exchange student Jack Van Strijp, Manteca High rolled to an overpowering 4-0 soccer victory over East Union High.
Manteca High’s girls’ basketball team lost a 42-26 game to Granada High of Livermore last week. Karen Steves led the Buffalo girls with eight points.
50 years ago: December 16, 1966 – A ball-hawking Manteca
High quintet stole an upset win from Sonora High in the Buffalo gym Tuesday night by a 61-55 count. Coach Joe Handy‘s team now sports a 1-4 record. An apparent reason for Manteca’s success besides the adept ball thievery was the balanced ball-shooting of Mike Jacobs, John Newton, Pat Mitchell and Curt Duran.
60 years ago: December 20, 1956 – The Manteca Lions Club gave the football team their annual banquet last Wednesday night. Trophies and awards were given out during the ceremonies and guest speaker of the night was Don (Tiny) Campora of the Stockton College Mustangs. Receiving the outstanding all-around trophy was 6-0, 175-pound senior fullback Jim Mayfield. There were approximately 140 people attending the banquet.
Turlock High pulled from a two-point lead by Manteca High at the end of the third quarter to tally an18-point lead before the end of the game, Turlock winning with a score of 44 to 26. Hugh Hansen, a transfer from San Francisco, was Manteca’s high point man with 10 points.
The Manteca High grapplers won their second meet of the year last Thursday by smothering Turlock High 30 to 14. Phil Hoot kept his record of pinning any competitor so far this year by pinning his man in the second round.
80 years ago: December 17, 1936 – The Manteca High Buffaloes quintet suffered an overwhelming defeat at the hands of Sonora High Friday night in a game played in the mountain city. Final score: Sonora 50, Manteca 26. Weight and height overpowered the local aggregation and, although they kept pushing the fight throughout the tilt, they never seriously pressed their opponents. A fast-breaking offense was featured by the Wildcats which netted them many points.
