The Manteca council of the Central Valley Association of Realtors added $1,500 to the Turkeys R Us effort Tuesday to assure there will be enough turkeys so that 1,300 struggling families in Manteca, Ripon and Lathrop will not go without on Thanksgiving.
The Turkeys R Us is now turning its efforts toward meeting the same need for Christmas. They are already almost $1,000 toward the goal of meeting the Christmas needs.
This marks the 12th straight year the community has stepped up to make sure their neighbors do not go without this holiday season.
“It’s amazing,” said Mark Mallory who oversees Second Harvest Food Bank. “We had people that you know it is tough on them to give open up to help this year.”
Organizers had been worried that the 13.5 percent unemployment would be a double-edge sword by creating more demand while reducing contributions. After a slow start, turkeys and money started coming in from individuals, families, businesses, and organizations.
Turkeys R Us has raised over $12,200. They also got a boost when a supplier gave them a big break on the price per pound for the first 500 turkeys.
Turkeys R Us organizers hope people will continue to give to the effort so that Christmas can be covered as well.
A number of people take the free turkeys they get for buying a set amount of food at supermarkets during the holidays and donate that to the effort.
Donations (make checks out to Turkeys R Us) can be dropped off at Coldwell Banker Crossroads offices at 319 Main Street near North Street in Manteca or 15810 S. Harlan Road in Lathrop or the Second Harvest Food Bank, 704 E. Industrial Park Drive in Manteca.
If you want to donate a frozen turkey or ham, take it directly to the food bank
