Ripon sophomore Brookelyn Betschart will have a rubber match with Sonora’s Kylie Serva, and it takes place Thursday in the Trans Valley League girls singles tournament final at Modesto Junior College.
They split their two head-to-head showdowns during the team-duals season.
Also on Thursday is the boys finale, which pits two River Islands sophomores — top-seeded Sai Pranad and No. 2 Sai Nagavarapu.
The first three rounds were held Tuesday at MJC. The finals will run during the doubles tournament on Thursday.
Seeded second, Betschart had a first-round bye and won her quarterfinal, 6-2, 6-4. She met No. 6 Ashlynn Bell of Orestimba in the semifinals, prevailing 6-3, 6-2. Serva is the No. 4 seed and got past top-seeded Mirella Fregoso of Orestimba, who forfeited after dropping the first set of her semifinal, 3-6.
Pranad made quick work of his opponents in the boys tournament, downing Orestimba’s Warren Varner 6-0, 6-0 and No. 4 Aiden Ramos of Hughson, 6-1, 6-0.
Nagavarapu started with a 6-1, 6-3 quarterfinal win over No. 7 Colton Reeves of Orestimba. He then warded off No. 3 Derek Meester of Ripon Christian, 7-6, 6-2, improving to 16-0 in TVL play.
SOFTBALL
Central Catholic 13, Manteca 8
Valley Oak League champion Central Catholic (12-0, 19-8 overall) carried a 10-2 lead into the bottom of the sixth inning, and that’s when the host Buffaloes (6-4, 13-8) made things interesting with a six-run rally.
They ultimately had no answer for Florida-committed Samantha Nichols, who slugged three home runs and a double in her astounding 4-for-5 performance that also included four runs and five RBIs.
Ayva Wilkins hot a home run for Manteca and drove in three runs. Bella Cooper went 3 for 4 with a double and a run. Marissa San Nicolas went 2 for 4 with a two runs. Na’ima Calderon contributed two RBIs.
Manteca hosts Patterson on Thursday.
BASEBALL
Pacheco 5, Lathrop 2
In Los Banos, the host Panthers (9-4, 16-6 overall) broke away from a 2-2 deadlock with a three-run barrage in the fifth inning of the Western Athletic Conference tilt.
Lathrop (4-9, 7-16) scored both of its runs in the top of the second off the bat of Ayden Louie. He finished 3 for 3 with a double and drove in Tommy Hammond and Thomas Dominguez Olea.
Ripon 2, Hilmar 0
Senior pitcher Hunter Weber got all the offensive support he needed early on, finishing with 11 strikeouts in his six-hit shutout at Mistlin Sports Complex.
The Indians (8-3 TVL, 16-9 overall) plated their runs in each of the second and third innings. Landon Espinola and Chase Swafford knocked in the runs (Jake Haines, Frank Carter-Castro).
Hilmar (4-7, 10-11) hosts the regular-season finale on Thursday.
