Eight commercial remodels accounted for just under $3 million of new construction activity in Manteca during January.

Leading the way was Wal-Mart’s $2.5 million remodeling permit for their South Main Street store. It is the second major remodel since Wal-Mart first opened the store in 1991.

JoAnn Fabrics was issued a remodel permit for work valued at $340,000 so the former Circuit City store at Stadium Retail Center can be converted into a fabric and craft venue. Dress Barn received a permit to remodel the former Fashion Bug store in the same complex. The Dress Barn work is valued at $50,000.

Both stores are targeting early spring openings.

A basic tenant improvement permit for work pegged at $18,000 was also issued to allow the Zen Bakery to establish a wholesale operation at 1316 DuPont Court in Spreckels Park.

The other four permits were for fairly minor work on retail space scattered throughout Manteca. Altogether commercial remodeling accounted for $2,988,000 worth of building activity.

There are several plans in review for new tenants at the Lifestyle Outlets at Manteca being developed at The Promenade Shops at Orchard Valley.

When all building categories are combined, it was the strongest January showing for construction in Manteca for four years.

There were 138 permits issued for work valued at $10.7 million. There were four less permits issued in December for work valued at $6.3 million.
