2010 Manteca Idol kicks off Wednesday

Those hoping to take home the crown of either Manteca Idol of Manteca Junior Idol only have two days to make sure that they’re ready.

On Wednesday, the annual singing competition that benefits the Boys and Girls Club of Manteca kicks off at Chez Shari. The venue is upstairs at the Manteca Park Golf Course clubhouse. Competition starts at 7 p.m.

The first round of 15 contestants will face the judges to determine whether they have what it takes to continue on to the final rounds of the competition that begins Sept. 8 and continues through the coronation on Nov. 8.

Ticket prices are still going to be $5 at the door. Season tickets will run $60 for the first family member, and $50 for each additional ticket purchased. All proceeds going benefit the Manteca Boys and Girls Club.

With the same contest format as last year expected to continue the wave of success that the Idol program has experienced in the last two years, those who succeed early will get the chance to come back on a routine basis and face off against some of the best singers that the contest has to offer. It will force the judges to tabulate a running total for each participant rather than evaluating the performers on an individual performance.

Original Manteca Idol Laura Poindexter will be welcomed as a guest judge as well as a halftime performer. Fan favorites like Brieanne Jansen were some of the first to show up at the auditions held earlier this summer.

It might be a competition with a given winner at the end, but the organizing committee – which meets periodically throughout the off-season – was ecstatic when the finalists last year formed a bond backstage that helped create the family atmosphere that those calling the shots were always trying to create.
