Board honors spelling bee winners

Trustees of the Manteca Unified School District will recognize winners of the recent Spelling Bee at Tuesday’s board meeting.

Included are Samantha Loughborough (August Knodt), Leonor Borges (Nile Garden) and Mia Holbrook (Walter Woodward) in the 7-9 division, and Haliegh Peterson (Veritas), Onyebuchi Ogbuli (Joshua Cowell) and Si Jie “Jessica” Tang (Walter Woodward) in the 4-6 division.

The six youngsters will be honored during Superintendent Jason Messer’s report in the 7 p.m. open session.

Petersen, Ogbuli and Tang were scheduled to compete Monday in the first round of the San Joaquin County Office of Education’s competition.
Loughborough, Borges, and Holbrook will go directly to the Dec. 9 championship round.

The winners and runners-up will represent San Joaquin County at the State Spelling Bee Championship in May.

Other agenda items include:

•East Union High coaches receiving recognition for their heroic efforts of promptly administering CPR on a staff member.
•Consider the election of board president, vice president, and clerk, and OK the meeting dates, and committee / commissions during annual organizational session.
•Messer will provide the latest budget update.
•Trustees will discuss and give direction regarding goals for the board. This includes promoting a culturally proficient, safe learning and working environment; world class educational system founded on a pre-kindergarten through sixth grade program that supports all students to achieve proficiency; and a foundation with a seventh- through 12th-grade program that meets the unique individual needs of students while preparing them for future success.
•A staff report on the utilization of buses.
