Verlene, a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, passed away peacefully at her home on October 12, 2026, at the age of 87. Born on May 26, 1939, in Wadena, Minnesota, she was the cherished daughter of John and Beulah Graham. Verlene’s life was a testament to her unwavering faith, love for family, and dedication to her community.
A graduate of Wadena High School, Verlene’s journey led her to North Central Bible College, where she met the love of her life, Arthur L. Reif. They married on July 7, 1962, in Minneapolis, Minnesota, and together they shared nearly 64 years of marriage, raising three wonderful children and building a home filled with warmth and devotion.
Verlene was the proud mother of Penelope (Oscar) Soltero, Douglas (Claudia) Reif, and Kandace (Barry) Sappington. Her legacy continues through her eight grandchildren-Lacee, Blake, Kayla, Amanda, Lauren, Jason, McKensi, and Emma-and eight great-grandchildren-Graceson, Bexley, Rhett, Nora, Zaidyn, Mark, Aiden, and Logan. Her family was her pride and joy, and she cherished every moment spent with them.
A talented musician, Verlene shared her love for music by giving piano and organ lessons for over 30 years. Her musical talents graced numerous congregations, including First Assembly of God in Manteca, St. Mary’s Episcopal Church in Manteca, Northgate Brethren Church in Manteca, and Big Valley Grace Community Church in Modesto. Her music provided comfort and joy to many, reflecting her deep spiritual faith.
Beyond music, Verlene was an avid seamstress and embroiderer, known for her incredible quilts and personalized embroidered gifts. Her creativity and attention to detail were evident in every piece she crafted, whether it was a quilt for a family member or a beautifully embroidered towel for a friend. She also found great joy in her garden and had a special place in her heart for her roses.
Verlene was preceded in death by her parents, her siblings Janis Walker and Gary Graham, and her devoted husband, Art Reif. She is survived by her brother, Timothy Graham, who, like many others, will dearly miss her candid spirit and loving presence.
