Why hide the pumpkin at Delicato Family Wines?
The winery is a neighbor of Perry & Sons, one of the nation’s oldest watermelon, pumpkin, and squash growers, packers, and shippers in the United States that is now in its 101st year.
Perry’s Market — a seasonal produce stand complete with a “pumpkin patch” — is open in front of the packing and shipping facility on the West Highway 99 Frontage Road north of Lathrop Road.
The frontage road turns into Crestwood Avenue inside the city limits.
The clues were:
*It is not the orange crush — The grape crush is anything but orange. Wine grapes come in two colors, black and green. By black, vintners mean red. Red grapes generally make red wines, but not always. Green grapes make white wines.
*Marking 102 years — Delicato Family Wines is 102 years old and is still on the land where it started in a barn. It has since grown to one of the largest wineries in the United States.
*CEO is EU grad — Chris Indelicato is the CEO of Delicato Family Wines. He graduated from East Union High School in 1984. During his senior year, he was a standout athlete for the Lancers, playing both baseball and football, which earned him a spot on the 1984 North Roster for the Lions All-Star Football game
*Dropped in — The three sons of founder Gaspare Indelicato who were the second generation winery operates indicated their father dropped the “i” and “n” from his surname that allowed him to brand the wines he produced as Delicato.
The winery’s tasting room is open daily from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. while the wine shop hours are 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
There is a $10 per person wine tasting room.
The winery and tasting room are just southwest of the Highway 99 and French Camp interchange.
