Trustees of the Manteca Unified School District will discuss a proposal Tuesday on a transportation plan for the upcoming year.
The proposal by transportation director Jason Osborn calls for the creation of a “no bus zone” in place of “walking distance.”
Not too long ago, the board voted in favor of increasing the walking distance for all students to an additional half mile as part of the Level II cuts necessary to bridge the $23.5 million budget shortfall.
The district, in turn, is hoping to save $400,000 per year from the general fund.
The transportation department held a series of meeting since late March, receiving 96 comments from those attending the sessions, bus drivers, and others who went online to express their concerns. Included were safety issues along with unsafe roads, speeding motorists, no sidewalks, sexual predators, and the work schedule of parents.
The action item will take place during the 7 p.m. open session in the new administration building.
Other agenda items include:
• In closed session, the board could appoint a director of fiscal services along with a senior director of student services and special education.
• Trustees will recognize Golden West, French Camp, Joseph Widmer, Joshua Cowell, Lathrop Annex, Lathrop and Stella Brockman as being the first-ever schools in California to earn Healthier U.S. School Challenge’s Gold Award recognition.
• Under Superintendent Jason Messer’s reports, a student at New Vision is scheduled to be honored for winning a state-wide essay contest.
• The board will recognize classified employees with 25- to 30- years of service.
• Trustees could adopt the calendar for the 2009-10 school year.
• The board could consider re-appointing three members and appoint two new ones to the Measure M Oversight Committee.
• Trustees are scheduled to accept the final completion of the multi-purpose facilities at both Neil Hafley and Shasta schools.
