Michael Greer, 19, has been called to serve a two-year mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Elder Greer will be serving in the Australia Melbourne West Mission and will enter the Missionary Training Center in Provo, Utah, Feb. 24.  Michael is a 2008 Sierra High graduate, and the son of Evan and Cindy Greer.  He has three younger brothers, Matthew, James and Darrell.

Michael is very grateful for the opportunity to serve a mission, especially in Australia.  Since he is the oldest of four boys to serve a mission, he feels a responsibility to be the best missionary he can be.  His parents are excited for him although they know two years without seeing their son will have its challenges.  Michael is a people person, makes friends easily and is eager to start his mission.  When asked why he wants to serve a mission, he replied, “I want to give people the opportunity to hear the Gospel of Jesus Christ and to feel the joy I do.”

During high school, Michael participated four years in band, playing the trombone and tuba.  He was also on the cross-country, track and wrestling teams which he thoroughly enjoyed.  Michael graduated from early morning seminary (a four-year program that prepares high school students for the spiritual challenges of life).  The 6 o’clock morning class gave Michael a greater love of the scriptures and helped him to stay strong in his values while attending high school.

Michael is employed by the America’s Tire Co. in Stockton which enables him to earn money to support himself on his two-year mission.  By working and saving, it has helped Michael to learn money management and be more responsible.  The Greer family enjoys visiting extended family members, going to Santa Cruz and taking their annual snow trip to the Sierra.
Michael will join 50,000 other missionaries serving missions for the Church in hundreds of major cities in the world as well as in thousands of smaller communities.  The missionary effort is based on the New Testament pattern of missionaries serving in pairs, teaching the gospel and baptizing believers in the name of Jesus Christ.  Missionary work is voluntary.  Missionaries fund their own missions and are not paid for their services.
