TRACY — The baseball gods were not very kind to the Northgate 10-11 All Stars for most of their District 67 championship game against Tracy American on Monday at Monticello School.

But those gods would victimize Northgate’s Willie Segura only once.

Robbed of a game-winning home run in the bottom of the sixth inning when his blast to the left-field fence got caught by the strong winds and blown outside the foul pole, Segura wasted little time in the ninth inning when he led off with a line-drive home run to center — far away from any foul poles and straight into the wind for the 1-0 walk-off win and the District 67 banner.

“I thought the first one was gone but then it went foul,” Segura said. “And then I got pretty mad at that.

“I was hoping for another one and I knew I had it when it left his hand I had it.”

The sixth inning was particularly frustrating for Northgate.  Logan Sousa led off the frame with a shot to center field that had to be run down for the out. Carlos Alvarez followed with a line drive down the third-base line that the third-baseman had to catch to avoid being injured and then Segura grounded out to first after his long foul ball.

In the eighth with runners on the corners and two out Alvarez hit a screaming grounder down the first-base line that was fielded to end the inning.

“It was a hard-fought battle with everybody,” Northgate coach Chad Lill said. “The kids played tough on both sides with excellent pitching and excellent defense and one clutch hit to end the game.”

Alvarez started on the hill for Northgate and pitched into the sixth, striking out seven. Segura pitched the next inning and struck out three and Anthony Flores pitched the final 2.1 innings and struck out two.

Northgate will travel to Valley Springs on Saturday, July 18 to begin the Section 6 Tournament at 10 a.m. at Duke Powers Park.
