Kayla Miller and Megan Anderson started out as volunteers at the Boys & Girls Clubs of Manteca/Lathrop.
“At first, we wanted to tutor the kids,” said Miller, who is a junior at Sierra High.
Along the way, she was approached by Jon Cardoza, director of operations / programs, to help revive the Keystone Club.
The chartered small group of the Boys and Girls Clubs of America is involved in leadership development for young people ages 14 to 18.
The Keystones elect officers choose their own activities, planning and implementing community service projects.
Miller and Anderson, who is also a junior at Sierra, are among the seven-member group of the new local chapter of the Keystones.
For their first-ever fundraiser, the Keystones will be conducting a collection of blankets, carpets, and rugs, benefiting the dogs, cats and other one-time pets in the Manteca Animal Shelter.
“Our group is new but our goals are to accomplish community service projects such as this and (other) fundraiser,” Miller said on Wednesday.
The Help the Animals was her mother’s idea, she noted.
The Keystones have set up a collection booth inside the K-Mart retail store at 255 Northgate Drive.
The two-week drive began Thursday, and will be available during business hours, with Thursday, Dec. 17, being the scheduled last day.
