Marcus Sy, 13, and Brianna Espejel-Garcia, 14, displayed outstanding marksmanship at the Manteca Police Chief’s Foundation Junior Police Academy Monday morning.
The Junior Police Academy is being staged by Manteca officers Shawn Cavin and Jason Downs.
Sy is an eighth grade student at McParland Elementary and Espejel-Garcia will be going to East Union High School in the near future.
Sy hopes to follow in his Dad’s footsteps and join the U.S. Marine Corps. Espejel-Garcia is planning to become a police officer like her older brother Jessie who is now a police officer in San Francisco.
Sy credits his dad’s mentoring on gun safety and firing a weapon while Espejel-Garcia said it was her 29-year-old brother who taught her how to handle a gun that made the Airsoft weapon shooting in the Academy Monday morning something she breezed through. It was a younger brother Juanzin, 21, who actually mentored her in shooting a gun out in the country.
The two-week academy has 20 students. It includes dealing with building searches, introduction to police motorcycles, the SWAT armored vehicle, Bomb Squad truck and robot, drug and gang prevention, high risk vehicle stops, and internet safety along with the basics of handling weapons that are non-lethal training weapons.
