Ag Day is returning after pandemic hiatus

It’s been two years since Ag Day was held at the Manteca Unified School District.

The 18th annual event at Great Valley Elementary School returns on Wednesday, from 8:30 a.m. to noon, with FFA students from the Weston Ranch High and Sierra High scheduled to give presentations consisting of, but not limited to, snakes ducks, shop/mechanics, and horticulture.

They’ll be joined by those representing different aspects of agriculture and the community.

Ag Day at Great Valley was last held in 2019. But due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the event was placed on hold.

This year’s Ag Day, according to organizers, will be a scaled-down version of what’s traditionally been one of the largest school-based agricultural events in San Joaquin County.

A virtual dairy trip to a dairy will be featured as a new Ag Day feature.

Others will be doing hands-on presentations for students of all grade levels – kindergarten through eighth grade – teaching students the value of ag, in general.

Live animals and tractors and other farm equipment will also be on display.

In addition, STEM Science and Common Core Math will be taught before and after the event for more hands-on learning.

Donations from Simplot, Horace Mann / Steve Fisher, SSJID, California Nuggets, Coca-Cola and Home Depot along with several local businesses are among the supporters for this year’s Ag Day.
