BOY JUMPED IN LAKE
Teen drowns in lake at River Islands
rescue

A 17-year-old boy at the end  of a volleyball game at Michael Vega Park at River Islands at Lathrop  jumped into an adjoining lake Saturday night and drowned.

A memorial took place Sunday evening along Lakeshore Drive with a second memorial planned for Wednesday.

The teen recently moved to River Islands with his foster family.

Lathrop Manteca Fire District divers were able to retrieve the body thanks to witnesses that were able to provide precise information on where the teen was last seen.

The incident at 10:40 p.m. Saturday underscores the danger of entering — or traveling on — water without life jackets.

Fire officials remind people that any body of water can be dangerous.

Lathrop Manteca Fire noted the Manteca-Lathrop has a lot of dangerous waterways within its jurisdiction including the San Joaquin and Stanislaus rivers south of Manteca, Oakwood Shores, Dos Reis Park, Haven Acres, Turtle Beach Recreation Area, and other locations.
