On the corner of West Louise Avenue and 5th Street is a Phantom fireworks stand benefiting the Animal Rescue of Lathrop.
This is one of seven “safe and sane” booths in the City of Lathrop selected via lottery system by the Lathrop-Manteca Fire District.
All are non-profit organizations including the Animal Rescue of Lathrop that can be found at the A T Ranch & Equestrian Center, 1360 Frewert Rd.
Darla McCallister, who was one of the volunteer helpers at the fireworks stand in the La Reina Supermarket parking lot on Wednesday, happened upon the Animal Rescue of Lathrop about 10 years ago.
She had just lost her aging horse when her daughter came across the local animal rescue via the internet (http://www.atranch.com).
This non-profit not only rescues, rehabilitates, and responsibly re-homes unwanted, abused or neglected, and at-risk horses, but also cows, goats, pigs, and other large farm animals, according to McCallister.
It was there she came across horse with a gnawed tail compliments of one of the goats. “It looked like a short ‘bob’ haircut,” said McCallister.
The name ‘Bobette’ stuck for this rescued horse.
McCallister is thrilled to have Bobette to this day.
Proceeds from fireworks sales will help defray cost for the Animal Shelter of Lathrop with vet bills and other needs to help extend the quality life to horses and other farm animals.
The stand in Lathrop is open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. today and the Fourth of July on Friday.
