“The Gift of the Magi” is a touching story of a young couple struggling financially on their first Christmas together.

This one-act play is based on the story by O. Henry. The cast and crew of the Lathrop High Centre Stage under the direction of teacher Hillary Pangburn have spent the past month of so working on this timeless “heartwarming holiday short story,” as she describes it.

Opening night is Friday at the LHS Theater beginning at 7 o’clock. General admission is $10 and $8 for seniors.

An 11 a.m. matinee of “The Gift of the Magi” is scheduled for Saturday followed by an encore performance later that day at 7 p.m.

The public is invited.

LHS sophomores Seth Barbour and Janelle Pacpaco headline the cast and crew totaling about 30 students. Barbour and Pacpaco play the young couple of Jim and Della, who are unable to afford presents for each other during their first holiday together.

Each will sacrifice what they treasure in order to provide that special gift for the other but, in doing so, will almost experience tragically funny cross-purposes.

According to Pangburn, this will be the first live LHS production since the pre-COVID “Almost, Maine.”

Lathrop High is located at 647 Spartan Way.
