The streets of Manteca are getting more perilous when it comes to the frequency of accidents.

There were 967 accidents in the first 10 months of this year. That’s up 26.08 percent from the same January to October period for 2020 when there were 767 accidents.

At the current pace accidents in Manteca will eclipse the record of 1,065 set in 2019. There were 958 overall accidents in 2020.

On the positive side, there has only been one traffic fatality on a surface street within the city limits through Oct. 31 of this year. The first 10 months of last year saw six deaths on the streets of Manteca.

Injury accidents are up 4.94 percent going from 162 to 170 based on data provided by the Manteca Police Department.

Hit and runs were up 9.41 percent as they went from 85 to 93. The number of accidents involving a motorist driving under the influence was up 39.58 percent jumping from 48 to 67.

The number of citations for moving violations — driving issues that contribute to accidents such as distracted driving, speeding, and failing to stop at a stop sign or red light — were down 9.29 percent in the first 10 months of this year. Manteca Police issued 1,767 such tickets through Oct. 31 compared to 1.948 for the same time period in 2020.

Police issued 562 non-moving violations such as for illegal truck parking, down 44.63 percent from the 1.015 issued in the first 10 months of 2020

They also made 67 DUI arrests, up 39.58 percent from 48 in the first 10 months of 2020.

The last time Manteca went a year without a traffic fatality was in 2014.

Last year six people ended up dying in traffic accidents. That tied the record set in 2019.
