The Weston Ranch High JROTC color guards consisting of Allyson Pascual, Vanessa Lutz, Giselle Rivera and Samantha Smith were part of the Race for Life 5K event in Rocklin benefiting the Biletnikoff Foundation .

Fred Biletnikoff is one of the Oakland Raiders’ all-time greats.

The former wide receiver enshrined in the Pro Football Hall of Fame suffered a tragic loss in 1999 when his daughter Tracey Biletnikoff, 20, was slain by her former boyfriend at a drug treatment center.

From this tragedy, the Biletnikoff Foundation was born, with the mission to helping young people realize their full potential through the support of community and education programs that effectively addresses the related problems of substance abuse and domestic violence.

One of the foundation’s big fundraisers is the annual Race for Life 5K Run / Walk event held earlier this month at William Jessup University.

A longtime fan of the Silver & Black, Sal Reyes, who is the Junior Reserve Officer Training Corp instructor at Weston Ranch High, was thrilled to have his color guard team involved in the annual event.

“Mr. Biletnikoff is one my favorite Raider greats,” he said.

In recent years, his JROTC teams have presented the colors at several Raiders game.

This year’s color guards are Allyson Pasqual, Brian Mendoza, Vanessa Lutz, Giselle Rivera, and Samantha Smith.

The Biletnikoff family continues to keep the memory of their late daughter alive. Tracey’s Place of Hope, a residential program for adolescent girls in crisis with mental health and substance abuse problems, was launched in 2000.

According to the foundation, Tracey’s Place of Hope “help turn tragedy into daily miracles by preparing young people to manage their recovery, their mental and emotional health issues, as well as teaching the necessary skills to live independently.”
