The summer may be winding down.

The City of Lathrop Police Department is stepping up on DUI enforcement, which started this week – included is a DUI checkpoint on Aug. 31, from 7 p.m. to 3 a.m., at an undisclosed location in town – and will continue through the Labor Day weekend.

Besides the checkpoints, local police will also increase patrol duties while have zero tolerance for impaired drivers.

According to Sgt. Chris Ly, Lathrop police has joined law enforcement agencies nationwide for the 2025 Summer DUI Mobilization. The goal is to deter impaired driving in an effort to prevent the tragedies that occurred on previous Labor Day weekends in previous years.

“We want our community members to understand that it’s our priority to keep people safe, so we’re asking everyone to understand that it’s our first priority to keep people safe,” Ly said. “We’re asking everyone to plan ahead if they know they’ll be out drinking.”

He added that the Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over campaign is an awareness effort to get the message out that drunk driving is illegal and can be fatal.

“Let’s make this a partnership between laws enforcement and drivers – help us protect the community and put an end to this dangerous behavior,” he said.
