A 17-year-old Franklin High School student from Stockton was identified as the teenager who drowned on Aug. 1 at Caswell Memorial State Park in the Stanislaus River.

Gabriel Lechuga Santiago, 17, of Stockton, drowned Saturday while rafting on the Stanislaus River off along Caswell Memorial State Park.

The San Joaquin County Sheriff’s Office reported the Franklin High student went under water around 4 p.m. while rafting and never resurfaced.

Manteca Fire Department responded to the water rescue call as Ripon Consolidated Fire District’s only manned engine company was tied up battling a vegetation fire.

Santiago’s body was found in Sunday following an extensive search.
