A high-speed chase of a stolen vehicle on Sunday resulted in a solo vehicle accident that killed the driver and closed a portion of Lathrop Road while authorities conducted an investigation.

A Manteca Police Department patrol unit was alerted to a possible stolen car on Sunday in the area of Union and Lathrop Roads, and when they arrived spotted the suspect vehicle – a white Ford pickup truck that fled when officers tried to initiate a traffic stop.

According to the San Joaquin County Sheriff’s Office, the suspect fled at a high rate of speed heading west on Lathrop Road and lost control of the vehicle after striking a fixed object as he drove up the first railroad overpass just west of Airport Way.

The vehicle went down the side of the embankment of the overpass and was badly damaged. After sustaining major injuries, the suspect was declared deceased at the scene of the accident.

Because of the nature of the incident, a multi-jurisdictional critical incident investigation was launched that includes the San Joaquin County District Attorney’s Office and the San Joaquin County Sheriff’s Office. The California Highway Patrol is conducting the investigation into the accident itself.

No additional information has been released by authorities at this time.
