$3,500 donation helps buy Boys & Girls Club karate uniforms

Commander Tom Perry of Manteca VFW Jimmie Connors Post No. 6311 along with Ladies Auxiliary President Julia Owens accepts plaques from the Boys & Girls Clubs of Manteca representative Robin Taberna of Taberna’s Tae Kwon Do Karate Academy as tokens of appreciation for the local VFW donations totaling $3,500, which will go towards martial arts uniforms.

The Boys & Girls Clubs of Manteca received a generous donation from Manteca VFW Post No. 6311 on Thursday.

According to Robin Taberna of Taberna’s Tae Kwon Do Karate Academy – he’s been teaching martial arts at the local Boys & Girls Clubs for 38 years – the $3,500 donation will go towards the purchase of Karate Gi uniforms.

Taberna currently has about 25 members in his classes.

He presented plaques to VFW Commander Tom Perry and Ladies Auxiliary President Julia Owens at Jimmie Connors Post No. 6311 as a show of appreciation.

“The Boys and Girls Club Taberna’s Tae Kwon Do Karate Academy would like to thank you for your donation to buy uniforms,” said inscription on the plaques.

Berry also announced that VFW Veterans Center at 580 Moffat Blvd. will be having its annual car show this Saturday, beginning at 10:15 a.m.

Featured will be about 100 vehicles on the grassy area surrounding the VFW facility.

This will mark the fifth year of Post No. 6311 will play host to the car show – prior to that, the event was held at East Union High for about 15 years.

A variety of prizes will be offered in a drawing at the car show.

In addition, the local VFW will celebrate the 100th birthday of World War II veteran Tony Villanueva on Saturday, May 25, from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m.
