MAN TRIED TO ROB PA. GIRL, 8, WITH KNIFE: READING, Pa. (AP) — A man has been jailed on charges that he tried to rob an 8-year-old girl who was on her way to buy vegetables at an eastern Pennsylvania market with $5 from her grandmother.

WFMZ-TV (http://bit.ly/1bvJzjL) reports that Reading police say the girl was sent to buy carrots for some beef stew when Jackenzy Pierre confronted her at about 4:30 p.m. Tuesday. Police say he had a six-inch kitchen knife and said, "Give me all your money." Instead, the girl ran home and later identified Pierre as her attacker.

Online court records don't list an attorney for Pierre, who is 18. He faces a preliminary hearing Aug. 23 on charges including threat of robbery, terroristic threats and harassment. Reading police say recently moved to the city from Haiti.

OREGON TO PROBE REFUSAL OF SAME-SEX WEDDING CAKE: PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — A same-sex couple in Oregon who tried to buy a cake for their wedding has filed a discrimination complaint against the bakery that turned them down on religious grounds.

The state Bureau of Labor and Industries will investigate whether Sweet Cakes by Melissa violated a 2007 state law that protects the rights of gays, lesbians, bisexual and transgender people in employment, housing and public accommodations, The Oregonian reported Wednesday.

In her complaint, Rachel N. Cryer, 30, said she went to the Gresham bakery on Jan. 17 for an appointment to order the cake. She met with owner Aaron Klein, who asked for the date and names of the bride and groom.

"I told him, 'There are two brides and our names are Rachel and Laurel,'" the complaint says.

Klein responded that he and his wife didn't serve same-sex weddings and "cited a religious belief for its refusal to make cakes for same-sex couples planning to marry," the complaint says.

PARALYZED OHIO BRIDE WALKS DOWN AISLE AT WEDDING: TOLEDO, Ohio (AP) — A woman from Ohio who's paralyzed from the waist down kept her vow to walk down the aisle at her wedding.

Stevie Beale used a walker with her father alongside last weekend in her hometown of Toledo.

Beale was paralyzed seven years ago in a car crash that killed a close friend. She uses a wheelchair and says that won't change unless there are medical breakthroughs.

She's spent the last year of therapy working toward walking on her wedding day.

Her new husband, Jared VanAusdale, tells WTVG in Toledo that her hard work paid off and that seeing her in a wedding dress was overwhelming.

Beale says her husband wouldn't let her give up her dream when she felt frustrated or tired.

DWI CHARGE FOR NY MAN ASLEEP IN CAR AT DRIVE-THRU: NEWSTEAD, N.Y. (AP) — You want a wake-up call with that?

State police say troopers were called to a western New York McDonald's last weekend for a report of a man asleep behind the wheel of a car in the drive-thru lane.

When troopers arrived at the fast-food restaurant in the Erie County town of Newstead at about 2 a.m. Saturday, they found the 32-year-old driver sleeping at the wheel of his car with the engine running.

The troopers woke him up and gave him sobriety tests, which he failed. Police say he was charged with driving while intoxicated for having a blood-alcohol content of 0.14 percent, nearly twice the legal limit of 0.08 percent.

NEVADA PETROGLYPHS THE OLDEST IN NORTH AMERICA: PYRAMID LAKE, Nev. (AP) — Ancient rock etchings along a dried-up lake bed in Nevada have been confirmed to be the oldest recorded petroglyphs in North America, dating back at least 10,000 years.

The petroglyphs found on limestone boulders near Pyramid Lake in northern Nevada's high desert are similar in design to etchings found at a lake in Oregon that are believed to be at least 7,600 years old. Unlike later drawings that sometimes depict a spear or antelope, the carvings are abstract with tightly clustered geometric designs — some are diamond patterns, others have short parallel lines on top of a longer line.

Scientists can't tell for sure who carved them, but they were found on the Pyramid Lake Paiute Tribe's reservation land.

"We initially thought people 12,000 or 10,000 years ago were primitive, but their artistic expressions and technological expertise associated with these paints a much different picture," said Eugene Hattori, the curator of anthropology at the Nevada State Museum in Carson City who co-authored a paper on the findings earlier this month in the Journal of Archaeological Science.

The petroglyphs could be as much as 14,800 years old, said Larry Benson, a geochemist who used radiocarbon testing to date the etchings and co-wrote the paper.

UPS JET CRASHES NEAR BIRMINGHAM AIRPORT, 2 DEAD: BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) — A UPS cargo plane crashed into a field near the Birmingham airport Wednesday, killing two pilots and scattering wreckage over a wide rural area moments after witnesses heard the massive jet coming in at treetop level.

People living near the airfield reported seeing flames coming from the aircraft and hearing its engines struggle in the final moments before impact.

"It was on fire before it hit," said Jerome Sanders, who lives directly across from the runway.

The plane, an A300 that had departed from Louisville, Ky., went down around daybreak about a half-mile from Birmingham-Shuttlesworth Airport. It broke into several pieces and caught fire. The pilot and co-pilot were the only people aboard.

Weather conditions at the time were rainy with low clouds.
