UTAH WOMAN GIVES BIRTH TO THIRD LEAP DAY BABY: PROVO, Utah (AP) — In one of the rarest feats in the annals of family planning, a Utah woman has given birth on a third consecutive Leap Day, tying a record set in the 1960s.
David and Louise Estes' daughter Jade was born Wednesday morning in Provo, an hour south of Salt Lake City, four years after their son Remington was born on Feb. 29, 2008, and eight years after their son Xavier was born Feb. 29, 2004.
'BLACK MADAM' ARRESTED IN BAD BUTTOCKS INJECTIONS: PHILADELPHIA (AP) — A woman who calls herself the "Black Madam" could face charges in the death of a London tourist who received illegal buttocks-enhancement injections last year in a Philadelphia hotel, police said Thursday.
Padge Victoria Windslowe, 42, was arrested Wednesday night as she prepared to host a "pumping party" where she was to illegally inject clients, according to police. She faces charges including aggravated assault and deceptive practices after one of her clients, an exotic dancer, suffered serious lung problems after an injection, Philadelphia police Lt. John Walker said. Windslowe was arraigned Thursday and was being held on $10 million bail, prosecutors said.
Windslowe is a "person of interest" in the death of the 20-year-old London woman who last year received injections at a hotel near Philadelphia International Airport, Walker said.
FUNERAL HOME DENIES ROLE IN HOUSTON CASKET PHOTO: NEWARK, N.J. (AP) — The owner of the Newark, N.J., funeral home that handled services for Whitney Houston says the home had nothing to do with a photograph that surfaced showing the singer's body in an open casket.
But Carolyn Whigham of Whigham Funeral Home and two pastors say they do know who took the photo that ran in the National Enquirer. They just aren't identifying the person and say that's up to the Houston family.
STUDENT HURT, MAN JAILED IN ARIZ. SCHOOL SHOOTING: WILLCOX, Ariz. (AP) — A man fired a rifle indiscriminately at a southeastern Arizona high school Thursday afternoon, wounding a 17-year-old boy who was watching a baseball game, police said.
Arthur J. Tineo, 40, was arrested shortly after the shooting at Willcox High School, and the weapon he is accused of using was recovered about a block south of the scene, according to the Willcox Department of Public Safety.
DPS Chief Jake Weaver said it's believed Tineo fired three rounds, but authorities don't yet know the motive for the shooting about 200 miles southeast of Phoenix. It happened shortly after 3 p.m., after classes were done for the day.
The wounded student suffered minor cuts from flying glass when the car he was riding in was shot at, authorities said. Another juvenile in the same car escaped injury, and authorities said a school employee was fired upon as he was trying to clear the area during the shooting.
MD. GOVERNOR SIGNS BILL LEGALIZING GAY MARRIAGE: BELTSVILLE, Md. (AP) — Maryland's governor signed into law Thursday a bill to legalize gay marriage, although opponents vowed to rally voters to reverse the change this fall in a referendum that's even anticipated by advocates of the new law.
"Religious freedom was the very reason for our state's founding and at the heart of religious freedom is the freedom of individual conscience," Gov. Martin O'Malley said before signing the legislation that made Maryland the eighth state in the U.S. to legalize gay marriage. The law takes effect in 2013.
