Planet Party Day for 2,000 6th graders

It will be a party like no other. And it’s shaping up to be arguably the biggest one in the Manteca Unified area, at least, for this school year.

It’s called the Planet Party 2011: An Environmental Celebration which is set for May 5.

The size of this event in terms of participants, the interactive educational and informational activities to be featured, and putting together the sponsors and exhibitors are all factors that dictate the advance planning for this gathering to be held at the district office campus, 2271 West Louise Ave.

Expected to attend are the district’s nearly 2,000 sixth-grade students, who are the focus of this environmental-education endeavor, plus the sponsors and exhibitors that are expected to join in this interactive informational event.

Planet Party will provide an opportunity for would-be sponsors and exhibitors, such as businesses, organizations and other groups, to help educate the young students on the importance of being green and being conscious of the future of a clean environment, according to Victoria Brunn, the Sustainability Coordinator for the school district’s Leadership on Green Initiatives Committee or LOGIC, who is being assisted by Patty Page, the district’s director of Nutrition Services, in co-chairing the event.

The purpose of Planet Party, now in its second year, is to “help our students become responsible citizens,” provide them with “a special learning experience they will remember,” and expand the knowledge that they have been learning during the school year while having fun at the same time, Brunn and Page said in a release sent to the media.

This will provide the students with an opportunity to ask questions and learn from the different experts in various fields of study that will be there, increase their knowledge about critical environmental issues, and instill in the young minds “a sense of stewardship for their world,” Brunn and Page added.

Sponsors and exhibits, on the other hand, will have this chance not only to share their expertise and knowledge with the young students to demonstrate to them that there are also financial benefits to being green.

The various displays, demonstrations and interactive exhibits featured in Planet day will highlight the following: clean air, conservation and agriculture, energy, green initiatives, water, and recycling.

“The concern for our environment and the sustainability of our local resources are vital issues to our students. Planet Party Day is an opportunity to reinforce these critical issues that affect our students on a daily,” Brunn stated.

The school district already has initiated green initiatives at all school campus ranging from “green purchasing” to recycling.

“Our students are experimenting with alternative energy forms, producing fresh produce, and conserving all resources. Planet Party Day will provide exposure for students to collaborate with community partners such as Pacific Gas and Electric, American Modular System/Gen7, Carton Council, South San Joaquin irrigation District, CBC Steel Buildings, and Simplot to produce innovative projects,” Brunn added.

Below is the list of opportunities for sponsors and exhibitors to take part in the Planet Party Day celebration:
