Manteca’s Breast Imaging Center at Doctors Hospital was toured by California State Senator Lois Wolk of the Fifth District.

Senator Wolk was met at the front door of the hospital Friday by administrators, staffers and breast imaging nurse-navigator Debbie Aventi. They spent a short time in a conference room where hospital administrator Mark Lisa and others brought the legislator up to date on the state-of-the-art facility in Manteca.

The half-hour tour took the senator and two of her staffers through the entire breast health program where they learned about a patient’s care from the time of diagnosis to treatment and through the post-operative care. Nurse Aventi is there at the patient’s side, holding their hands, to reduce their level of anxiety. Many of her patients have freely referred to her as their “angel” as they go through the breast screening including biopsies and even their surgeries.

The state senator was guided through the different sections of the department where staff professionals pride themselves in providing a diagnosis within five working days after the patient is first screened with a mammogram. Some facilities reportedly take as long as 60 days for a diagnosis.

Doctors Hospital of Manteca was recognized last March by the National Consortium of Breast Centers as a Certified Quality Breast Center. In October of 2009, the hospital was awarded a three-year term as a Breast Imaging Center of Excellence in Mammography, Stereotactic Breast Biopsy, Breast Ultrasound and Ultrasound-Guided Breast Biopsy as a result of a survey by the American College of Radiology.

“Since the breast health program’s inception (in 2007), we’ve made it one of our goals to achieve the quality that the ‘Center of Excellence’ status represents, noted Mark Lisa who serves as chief executive officer for Doctors Hospital of Manteca. “Our team of doctors, nurses and highly skilled technologists made this happen through lots of sweat equity and dedication, and I’m very proud of them.”

Throughout her years of public service in the California State Assembly and the Senate, Wolk has earned a reputation as a problem solver in the fields of health, human services and elder abuse among others.

She currently serves on a committee on Health as well as Autism and related disorders.

Hospital Spokesman EricMcMurtrey added that Doctors Hospital has taken a major step with its Breast Imaging department to ensure it provides the best possible care to breast patients in the Manteca community.

Senator Wolk’s district includes Manteca, Lathrop, Stockton and Tracy as well as some parts of Sacramento County. During her six years in the State Assembly, Wolk succeeded in authoring 56 laws including legislation to establish a statewide immunization registry to ensure that more children are immunized.
