For the last 28 years Soroptomist International of Manteca has been making it a goal to ensure students within Manteca Unified have the crisis counseling that they need in the event of some of life’s unexpected challenges.
And on Tuesday the group continued its annual tradition of donating money to Manteca Unified’s Health Services department with a $10,000 check to bring the total in the nearly three-decade long undertaking to $338,500.
“You never know when this money is going to save the life of a student, or help a student stay in school when they feel like they can’t,” said Soroptimist Betty Ingell – who used to run the district’s Health Services Department. “This is something that we plan for with our fundraising every year and it’s something that’s important to us.”
According to current Health Services Coordinator Leslie Agostini, the money will be used to provide crisis counseling to students in need through a partnership with Valley Community Counseling in Manteca – providing psychological and emotional support to students who may be in crisis or dealing with complicated issues that require professional assistance and support.
While the money donated doesn’t cover the entire annual operating budget of the department’s specialized counseling program, the individual impact on the student, Agostini said, is invaluable.
“It’s extremely important to have these resources available for our students,” Agostini said. “And we’re grateful for the support that the Soroptimists provide us every year in helping to make this possible.”
According to Ingell, the money is raised through a variety of efforts throughout the year and then set aside for individual projects like the counseling program that has long been and will remain a priority for the local service organization.
The Soroptimists helped launch the school support service 29 years ago after a cluster of teen suicides rocked the community. Four promising lives ended in a suicide pact.
Anyone interest in helping assist the Soroptimists can find out more about the group on Saturday, Sept. 23, during a meet and greet  from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Delicato Winery at Highway 99 and French Camp Road just north of Manteca.
It is open to anyone interested in joining with the Manteca Soroptimist in making an impact on the community.  Manteca Soroptimists has a 64-year history of serving Manteca, and are welcoming new members.  There is no charge for event. On Saturday, Sept. 30, Soroptimist International of Manteca is holding their second annual “Dream It Be It” program at the Manteca Boys and Girls Club.   The one-day program is designed for to motivate and empower young women to achieve their dreams.  Participations must be currently in grades seven and above.   Swag bags and lunch for participants is provided.  There is no fee but space is limited.
